…….holy shit that actually makes sense. If any prints of this particular cut did get sent to theaters, I imagine watching them would be very tedious, due to the poor condition. I’m imagining like, Friday the 13th uncut sequel gore levels of wrecked, what with the loss of audio, unstable image, and missing frames/shots. Damn-near unusable.
It would still be better than nothing, but I think the search should look to universal first, and see if any prints of the film with deleted scenes still exist there.
yes i think this should be a plan b if you will, this is very unlikely but just a possibility so we should look for it conventionally first. hope its found soon
True. Though at that point, we would have to rule out the possibility of the mid-production edits still existing (extended sharptooth footage, oasis scene, flower scene, etc), and anything else cut prior.
Personally, I believe this will likely take a while to find. The earliest possible date we could find it would probably be summer 2024.
Also, the Animation Cels for the extended sharptooth footage kinda have an eerie vibe to them, is it just me?
i understand why they cut some of this stuff for a g rating, but they should've just gone for the pg so the movie quality would be better.
Just a correction, the movie was never intended to be rated PG, and wasn’t cut down for that reason. All the uncut animated scenes could have made it in and it would still have a G rating. Spielberg simply thought the scenes would be too scary for kids.

Although, the scenes would have definitely turned the film into a superior cut. The original ending would have been great, and I accept that one as the canon ending.
EUREKA! I HAVE FINALLY RECEIVED A RESPONSE! Oh crap, sorry for yelling, but I was starting to think nobody cared about the search lol. Thank you for the response. Back o topic though, what you said is probably true. The same happened with rock-a-doodle, in which one of the animators (Jean morel) had uploaded the skunk pie scene (I’m kinda tempted to start a separate thread for that, in case he might have a test screener cut of the film).
But for these scenes, I feel like if someone had them, they would have turned up by now. We might be able to convince one of the crew members to go look for it, but from there, we can only hope.
I feel like some film record label like Kino Lorber, Criterion Collection, or Shout Factory could be licensed the rights to dig into that archive and find something.
It helps that some of the scenes were cut a mere 2 weeks before the film was supposed to release. I seriously doubt they don’t have at least a VHS workprint of those cuts of the film. I think the majority of the cuts post-April 1987 still exist in some form.
There’s also the fact that the executive producers on the film, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas are film preservationists. Any film he has directed or produced, Spielberg made sure to preserve scenes that were cut. That’s why the jurassic park deleted scenes still exist, despite never being released. George Lucas also preserved most of the deleted scenes from the early Star Wars movies.
So Mr. Coat asks: “So why would both filmmakers approve of the removed scenes being destroyed?! I feel like there’s a longer story here”.
Honestly, I’ve always been interested in deleted scenes from 80’s animated movies, especially don bluth films. They are so damn underrated.
Anyways, thank you for your help.
Also, if you need to know more about this piece in particular, it does have an article on the lost media wiki, so feel free to check it out. Don’t look at the archive one though, it’s not as accurate.
heres just an idea but, you said some scenes were cut 2 weeks before the release date, so what if they sent the full movie to some movie theaters? I'm just thinking that they would've had to send the movie to the theaters in time for the release. maybe im wrong though please correct me.
Wait, in addition to this theory, if the cinemas did notice and were told not to screen the post-production edit, wouldn’t the studio have taken the reel back to their archive?
Or well, he isn’t making one right now, but he did add it to his topic list, so he does plan to.
alrighty makes sense. Im sure he's very busy, but when he gets to it, this post should blow up. just make sure to bump this thread to keep it relevant.
unless they were told to destroy it and someone took it home
i feel like if i was told to destroy a reel that no one wanted, i would just take it home
True. To be honest, if this ever gets found, I hope Bobson Dugnutt makes a fanedit of the movie, specifically 2 different ones:
the first one only restored the post-production cuts that fit in with the soundtrack, to accurately recreate the post-production cut, which is the version that James Horner composed the soundtrack to.
The second one restored all the deleted scenes, including the earlier edits, and removes all the music, in order to recreate a test screening cut that audiences would have been shown. I’m thinking replacing the current soundtrack with pre-1988 soundtracks from other movies, to make a temporary soundtrack. The reason for replacing all the music is prior to the post edits, is because most of the cut footage removed prior were cut before the soundtrack was made, and as a result, would no longer fit in the movie as is.
This should be an interesting one for Bob to take on.
Those are my ideas anyway.

Overall though, i was hoping some major boutique label like Shout Factory or Criterion Collection would try to find the scenes themselves for a potential 35 year anniversary 4K remaster, but since it’s only about 2 months before the 35th anniversary, I think it’s unfortunately out of the question now.
I highly believe a workprint still exists in some form, that’s how the Hell scene from All Dogs Go to Heaven survived.
Probably, but I think the animated scenes that were cut made it beyond the workprint stages. Most were actually cut only 2 weeks before release.
I actually plan on making a separate thread for all dogs go to heaven and rock-a-doodle deleted scenes in the future, when this search is over. I’d love to see the cut of rock-a-doodle that Jean morel has. He probably has a bunch of deleted scenes in that cut we haven’t seen before.
