There is a PC game I played years ago, probably in the 2010s sometime and I haven't been able to remember what it was. From what I remember, it was 3D and third person. Basically it was like an open sandbox but the world you were in just had a single colour texture for the walls, like light grey and possibly a grid like texture on the floor. What I remember is that you could build a machine out of blocks and add gears, propellers and wheels to help it move around. You could upgrade to different gear systems and new parts as you progressed in the game. I also remember a cannon in the game that could only fire one cannonball (at least I think that is right and that I am no mixing that up with the Cannon in BeamNG.drive.
I also think you had to complete certain challenges to progress in the game.
I remember there was other machines in the game that could attack and destroy your machine.
The plain gray background you mention reminds me of Besiege. I haven't played it so idk if all the details align, but it's the first thing that came to mind.

Yes!! Thank you. I actually found out about the game while watching someone doing a Lets Play of it on YouTube at the time but I couldn't remember who it was. Now I know it was LGR.
