The discovery of the Wicked Witch of the West episode of Sesame Street. For years it was hidden away after it original viewing and never shown outside of to some small groups of people very rarely. I was certain it was never going to be recovered unless Sesame Street themselves decided to release it and that seemed highly unlikely. People spent years messaging and asking for this episode to no avail until someone finally leaked the it online 46 years later.
That one is memorable for me because I had just been talking about that Sesame Street episode, at the time, with my family when the topic of lost media cropped up and the very next day I discovered somebody had leaked it onto YouTube. The episode is kind of funky, a very different Sesame Street episode than I'd ever seen before but maybe it was because of all of the lost media hype concerning it.
Truthfully, I don't understand why that episode was still under lock and key so many years later. There's way more content in kids shows over the decades that are deemed actually creepy over having the Wicked Witch zooming around Sesame Street. Mister Rogers even had her in one of his shows, for god's sakes, explaining that her character is just pretend and just her wearing a costume. After viewing the episode, it really wasn't bad enough in my opinion to hide it away for so long. I think Sesame Workshop still just were sitting on it to be a-holes. I mean, it's so old it's not like the Wicked Witch episode would've landed into rotation ever again on TV. And if it were a copyright thing I haven't exactly seen the rights holders to the 1939 Wizard of Oz movie racing to copyright flag blitz the posts of the episode on YouTube like other copyright holders do anally.
