I've been interested in lost media for quite some time, but I never thought until recently about joining this place and posting my own personal lost media white whale. I'm aware that lost commercials are a bit of a crapshoot and often not really lost at all - just buried in compilation videos, but that being said, I have put a fair amount of effort into searching for this commercial because an element from it (which I will describe below) was extremely relevant to my family and I have still found nothing.
I'm not even sure if this is actually lost media, and hell the best possible outcome for me would be if someone just finds it casually and I end up eating crow. Either way, the main problem is that I just don't remember at all what the commercial was for, only that it involved rice. I'll describe all the details I remember from it below:
The Commercial
The commercial in question took place in a well-lit suburban home with a caucasian family and their dog. The father or mother of the household, I don't remember which, states that they are having rice for dinner. Each member of the household (their spouse, their kids, and notably the dog) then says "Rice?" in succession, with the dog being the last in the order to do so, barking it in a deep tone, like the kind of "boof" noise a bulldog makes. On that note, the dog from what I remember was a bulldog, boxer, or some other kind of dog with floppy jowls, however this may not be the case. At this point, things get muddy, but I believe the person who stated that they are having rice for dinner says something along the lines of "Yep, rice!" and reveals a fancy looking rice dish, at which point it cuts to the produce ad.
This commercial was likely for Uncle Ben's, or some other similar brand of rice-based easy meals - though it could also be for dog food that contains rice, however this is unlikely as I distinctly remember the entire family saying "Rice", which they would have no reason to do in that case.
The Time Period/Area
The commercial aired in southwest Canada (BC/AB/SK) in the late 2000s as far as I can recall, though it may have been a bit earlier. I know this because the way that the dog says the word "Rice" became a bit of an in-joke among my family, who would repeat it in the tone that the dog did whenever someone brought up rice or said that we were having rice, which bolsters the idea that the commercial was indeed for a rice product and not something that contains rice as an ingredient. It is possible that it aired in the US as well, but I am not sure. It might be important to note too that I am not the only one of my social circles to distinctly remember this commercial and even quote it, so it appears to both have been extremely prevalent in the area and aired quite frequently.
The Challenges
In my own personal searches, I've run into a few annoying roadblocks along the way. Many dog foods, for example, are advertised as having rice in them, which absolutely floods the results for any searches involving "dog" and "rice". Furthermore, Uncle Ben's has several commercials involving dogs in some way, which may be a nice hint that it is indeed a commercial for Uncle Ben's, however these commercials that are more widely archived flood the results of most attempts to get more specific with the methods of searching. Furthermore, generic searches like "dog commercial" are so saturated with irrelevant commercials of all sorts that the waters rapidly turn from muddy to downright abyssal.
So this... is the "Rice Dog" commercial.
I'm not expecting any headway to be made on this, nor am I really expecting anyone else to really care, but I wanted to throw this out there on the off chance that someone else remembers this commercial, has it recorded somewhere, has seen it online, or otherwise.
