So there's this book I haven't been able to stop thinking about all these years. I remember reading it for a class back when I was in elementary school, which would be between 2006 at and 2011 latest, 2012-2013 are not off the table by way less likely. I read the book in french but it probably has been been published in other languages in other countries.
From what I recall it was a more or less short illustrated novel aimed at children or preteens at the latest.
I'm not sure about where the story takes place I think it was set in either somewhere in the middle east, India or northern Africa.
I don't remember much about the general plot of the book, I know it had a male protagonist who lived with his mother and was chased by what I remember is a group of people who wanted him dead for reasons I can't remember.
One thing I do remember clear as day is one scene near the end where him and his mother hatch a plan to escape the group of antagonists. His mother suggests that they bury him in the ground with a straw so he can still breathe and that, when the group will come looking for him she will tell them he's dead while cutting onions to pretend she's crying. That's what they end up doing, it works and they live happily ever after.
