Hello! I'm searching for this on behalf of my Dad, who remembers this song from an audio recording shown to him by a friend somewhere between the late 80s and early 90s. He was in a punk band at the time and remembers making a cover of it, but he can't find it anywhere.
He describes the song as having been a fast paced punk song, with vocals that were more spoken/screamed than sang, and an instrumental that sounded like they "were banging on their instruments". It's possible that only their cover of it was in this genre, and the original sounded different, but he thinks it's pretty unlikely.
The lyrics were centered around the singer recalling events of his life, and at the end of every verse, just before the chorus, he would deadpan and say "I think it was French" under different contexts. One verse he remembers is the singer talking about how he brought a girl back to his place to have sex, and how in the morning "She made toast. I think it was French." Other possible verses may have been about a girl tying her hair in a French braid, and another about French fries.
He remembers the chorus following each verse lacking lyrics and just being a guitar riff. The song was definitely in English, and the band was probably either American or British.
Songs that have been ruled out so far are: Ca Plane Pour Moi (or the English version), Toast by Streetband, and Toast by Heywood Banks.
