‘Santa Claus: The Movie’ is a holiday film released on November 27, 1985. Upon release, the film was a financial and critical failure. Despite this, the movie’s production design, casting, and soundtrack score by composer Henry Mancini were praised and cited as highlights of the movie. It’s since gone on to become a cult-classic Christmas movie.
Included in the soundtrack of the film is the song ‘It’s Christmas (All Over the World)’, performed by singer Sheena Easton. However, the song was originally written for the lead singer of the band Queen, Freddie Mercury. It has supposedly been confirmed that Freddie had recorded a demo for the song at Pinewood Studios (the filming and recording location for the movie), however, due to Queen being in high demand for film soundtracks and the band having already committed to the soundtrack for the 1986 movie ‘Highlander’, Freddie’s version of the song never came to fruition.
Outside of the Wikipedia page for the movie, I can’t seem to find any other information regarding this demo of the song. It’s been discussed on a couple of forum sites and its existence hasn’t yet been debunked to my knowledge, but that’s about all the info we have.
I’m surprised I haven’t heard of this before. This kinda reminds me of the situation with Mariah Carey being the original singer of “Where are You Christmas?” from the Grinch which is also lost to this day.
