So this is something that I recently discovered through TikTok. As a little girl, I was a big fan of the Disney Princess franchise so I’m surprised I never heard of this. In 2005, trailers for a series of DVDs called Disney Princesses: The Enchanted Tales were shown before some Disney DVD and VHS tapes. The idea for The Enchanted Tales was that there would be two short movies featuring two princess characters that followed a certain theme.
What’s strange is the trailer that initially aired for the first Enchanted Tales DVD featured Aurora and Belle, it was entitled “A Kingdom of Kindness”. However, when the DVD was actually released in 2007, it was instead Aurora and Jasmine. It was renamed “Follow Your Dreams”. It also seems like Aurora was initially given a different story than the one from A Kingdom of Kindness. Neither the Belle or original Aurora story ever saw the light of day outside of clips from the trailer.
A lot went into marketing The Enchanted Tales. Two doll lines were released, including the Play Line dolls and the fancy Brass Key porcelain dolls. The Play Line dolls only seem like they featured Aurora, Jasmine and Belle. But the Brass Key dolls featured them along with Ariel, Cinderella and Snow White. I actually had the Jasmine Play Line doll as a child. But I had never heard of the Enchanted Tales DVD until now. The princesses were also given a redesign with gold dresses to promote it. I remember seeing those designs and wondering what it was all about. You can see a lot of the merchandise that was released for The Enchanted Tales online.
It seems like Disney had relatively high hopes for The Enchanted Tales. The Belle one that was never released featured all of the original cast, including Angela Lansbury. The animation for A Kingdom of Kindness and Follow Your Dreams was very high quality. It was similar to the original films and much better than some of the direct to video sequels. However, due to poor sales of Follow Your Dreams, Disney never released any of the other Enchanted Tales DVDs. The Belle and original Aurora ones seem like they were finished. Disney was also going to release one featuring Cinderella and Mulan. I’m not sure how far in development it was but a poster for it does exist and it was entitled “Honesty”.
So the original “A Kingdom of Kindness” Enchanted Tales with Belle and Aurora were finished but never fully released. “Honesty” with Cinderella and Mulan seemed in development but I’m not sure how far along Disney was in making it. There was a bonus disc that came along with a re-release of Follow Your Dreams. It features Belle, Cinderella and Mulan’s songs made for their Enchanted Tales movies. I’ll link some sources for everything here.
