Hi! I know this is the lost media wiki forums and not archive.org but I figured I would ask incase anyone knew how to do this stuff. I still want to do my part by preserving some media I just don’t know how. I have a program booklet from an event and a small postcard sized flyer and I want to archive them. Do the files have to be at a certain quality? What file type do the have to be?(eg: PDF, JPEG, etc) Also how would you upload a YouTube video to the Internet archive? Can you just use a screen recorder like OBS to record the video? I’m still new to lost media so any help would be appreciated!
Thank you!

I’m trying to look for Felicity’s Door/Project Dreamwalker. If you want to help out with my search then click here:
The way I upload books and printed media in general would be to upload it as a JPEG. If it has more than two sides (like an actual book), I would upload it as a PDF. In both cases I would take whatever raw scan I've made and crop (and sometimes rotate) it to remove any white space if possible, so I don't think quality would matter much (although I recommend scanning in a high resolution if possible). I'm sure you can find sites that would allow you to compile JPEGs into a PDF.
As for uploading YouTube videos to the Internet Archive, it's as simple as downloading the video and uploading the file to it.

Heya!
I've been archiving media on there for a quite a bit, and while some of this is outside my wheelhouse, I'll do what I can to help.
For me, a good rule of thumb is that the higher the quality you can manage, the better. Unfortunately, sometimes you have to work with what you have and something that's low to fair quality is better than nothing. This was the case for me with uploading scans of some hard to find thrash/black/death metal album art. If you're able to scan what you have into your computer and maybe polish them up in Photoshop or another program if necessary, that's great too. I think Archive is fairly generous when it comes to file types so I wouldn't worry too much about that, as there's playable DOS games on there that run clean. If you run into a problem with say, an image file, then converting it to another format should fix it. Size wise, I don't think you'll run into a problem either. I've uploaded full length movies and albums and I've yet to have any trouble there.
With videos from Youtube, Vimeo or another place, I highly recommend getting the program 4K Video Downloader. It's a godsend that works like a dream, and it's also free with no limits as to how much you can save (I think they cap you at 30 individual files a day, but that's it). You can also have the choice of saving it as a video or just the audio, which is great if you're looking to just back up the audio or music. I've been using it for years now and it's how I've managed to archive about 98% of the stuff on my page. It's a great way to work around OBS and preserve the original quality that can otherwaise be tarnished by a screen recorder. If the clip or media you're looking for is somewhere in the video itself, you can throw it into Audacity or whatever video editing program you have to extract it.

I am mega new to helping with the cause of lost media, but it is pretty darn easy to upload on archive.org. Just make sure you either have a very fast to reasonably fast internet connection or if you have a slower one make sure you have a time to monopolize that connection. My first video upload attempt to archive.org failed due to someone else being on my home internet at the same time as I was uploading and it fouled it up. I got discouraged for twenty four hours and then tried again and was successful.
When it comes to uploading videos, say if it's something from your own collection that you want to rip and upload to archive.org, I know there are computer programs that help in ripping VHS content from home recordings into computer form but am a newbie and have zero idea what is out there for that.
I used a different method. I have spent years on and off ripping VHS recordings taken from TV of the time periods from my personal collection directly to DVD-R and saving them that way. I recently decided to try to upload some of that material I've collected and it was as simple as putting the DVD-R into my computer and running the programs through the VLC media player and recording them into a new video file(s) that I could then upload to archive.org. Read up on VLC media player if that is something you'd be interested in using, it's a wonderful media player and all purpose video and audio file tool.
