Here’s an interesting one. Back when I had a PC, I used to love having these demo discs such as the ones from Macdonalds and also the ones you simply get in magazines.
I used to own quite a lot of educational games to help me learn English, since I had mild autism and couldn’t speak as a toddler.
Such as Learning Land and Reader Rabbit.
Okay, here are the two games I love to track down and see what were they really all about;
- one was about a puzzle game where you control a family (father, son, two daughters and a dog(?) ) where they explore the catacombs of a castle. A back story is present where a king was about to send a digging crew into the rainforest where this angered the people. One of them shoots a blow dart into the king, paralysing him, where there was no cure. So you have to find a cure for him.
The family would find a slope and you have to decide which one to use first. Each slope was made of different materials and you have to decide which one to use. When I chose a metal(?) slope, the family would get into a sledge to slide down, but then lost control and fall out. There is also a female voice who narrates the story and situation where she said; “oh dear!”
I went past with some parent help but don’t remember what happens next. This was back in 2000’s.
There are apparently two ports with different animated introductions. One features a realistically-drawn king walking away from the forest but when a dart hits him from upfront, he falls down behind.
Then another features a badly-animated circle-shaped king where the dart shoots him in the bottom and he faces the screen with a green face and cross-shaped eyes.
Now for the other PC game. Apparently this is based on a puppet show about little woodland critters. This was a game with some stories like Red Riding Hood and one about a little girl who wants to go swimming but her mother refuses since there are sharks nearby. There are also nursery rhymes such as Mary had a little lamb. Those were kept as hand drawn still shots but sometimes has an interaction, like clicking on a shark fin can reveal the angry shark taking a small dive out of the water.
The animal heads, hand drawn animated, appear as narrator. The story animal is a moose who does all the voices while an owl with a guitar sings the nursery rhymes.
Then, there’s also a computer animated segment which involves a squirrel and a raccoon sitting on a cabin porch. In this, you can move their arms or change their reactions like you’re telling a story.
They also have a little conversation.
Squirrel: I spy an apple.
Raccoon: an apple on a tree?
S: yes, an apple on a tree.
R: is the apple for me?
S: no, the apple is for me.
R: oh…
Very vague memories of these games, but I like to see what they’re really called. Any help is freely appreciated, thank you!
