My partner is a massive Rick and Morty fan who hypefixates and analyzes every thing Rick and Morty related (she was questioning Justin Roiland before his firing even happened). Recently she showed me this commentary featuring the show's creators, Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, as well as former writer/voice actor, Ryan Ridley discussing their initial plans for the season 2 premiere episode, "A Rickle In Time". If you're a fan of this show, and know this episode, it's not surprising to hear that many ideas were scrapped and cut out from it. For example, Roiland discusses how there was originally going to be a reference to the Westburo Baptist Church in the background artwork that uses an offensive slur.
However there is a significantly interesting "short shorts" scene that was cut out from this episode. In this scene, while the world experiences a time quake, Morty is seen abruptly wearing short shorts, with him and Rick arguing about the decision. Apparently the scene was removed for feeling "too forced" and Roiland feeling that his performance could have been better.
According to Roiland, this scene is featured in a DVD with other storyboards that were cut out from the season. Ryan Ridley later stated in an interview that this scene was included in the DVD as well, and that it was cut because it was partly improv, and Roiland broke the fourth wall.
However, when my partner contacted someone who owns the DVD, they claimed the scene wasn't included. This is the only image of the alleged scene that we could find online. No one has uploaded the scene, so we assume that it's become lost media. It should be worth noting that there previously was a search for the lost Rick and Morty subway commercials that reference Jared Fogle. According to Roiland, those commercials may have been saved on a series of flash drives he owns. Many people believe those scenes will never surface the internet due to his recent controversies. My theory is that maybe the deleted "Short Shorts" scene is likely archived on one of these drives as well. It would make sense, since Roiland was the one unsatisfied with the take.
Edit: I just realized there is a seasons 1-3 DVD as well. I'm unsure if the discs are the same or if the scene is featured in there. I believe my partner also found this image through Twitter. If that's the case, where did this image come from? I tried using image reverse search websites and came to no results.
