So the Playhouse Disney series “Out Of The Box” has a bit of a rare case of lost media—-three episodes that 100% exist, but were so rarely aired that virtually no info about them exists online.
The episodes are called “Treasures”, “The Gift” and “Let’s Eat Out”. They are from season 1, but from what I’ve researched, were only broadcast whole season 2 was premiering (in mid-to-late 1999, specifically). They were reworked and reshot as season 2 episodes, and aren’t on Disney+. I’ve tried contacting Disney+ about the matter, and they’ve said they’ll pass along the info, but nothing has changed.
I watched this show at the time these episodes aired and definitely seem to remember at least one of them, so I’ve been curious about them for years now. I’ve actually contacted Vivian McLaughlin (the show’s female host) on social media, but she seems to know as much about this as we do. I’ve also contacted Tony James, the show’s other host, who told me he was unaware that there were episodes missing from Disney+; he’s been pretty quiet lately but I’m hoping to ask him a few followup questions about the missing episodes.
Right now, the best we can do is hope a recording of one of the episodes turns up. My family recorded the show in about 1999; the tapes are long gone, but it was in I believe 1999, before season 2 and the missing episodes premiered, so we wouldn’t have had them. But anyone else maybe have any recordings of the show from around September of 1999? That’s what we need to look for.

I used to watch the show all the time. Can’t believe these are lost to time.

Do you remember an episode where Tony was the only adult present, and the only one there for the goodbye song? I have a vivid memory of this and but no one else has been able to back up this memory (Wikipedia’s synopsis for the episode “The Gift” was my own contribution). And no, I’m not confusing this with the one where Viv is the only adult present. I thought for a while that I might have mixed up which host was absent, but this episode’s goodbye song played out like a normal goodbye song but with only one host, unlike the one without Tony where the kids stay for it.
Heck, I’ve actually asked Viv about this on social media and she seems pretty sure she was in every episode, but admits it’s possible that she simply doesn’t remember it since she wasn’t in it. I’m hoping to ask Tony but he hasn’t been active on social media lately.

Hey there! Any updates on the three missing Out of the Box episodes? I really want to see the episode "The Gift"
I do too!
The only reason I actually remember that one was because a) I actually saw it twice, and b) it was the first time they’d ever done an episode without a host (since the Revealing Feelings episode hadn’t been broadcast yet) so was definitely an episode that stood out. I have no idea if I ever saw the other two missing episodes, but I don’t remember any episodes feeling like carbon-copies of other ones (they’re earlier versions of season 2 episodes) so I likely only saw them once if at all.

I’ve put in requests about that at the Disney+ help desk and they always say they’ll get back to me if they have any info but they never do. So I think our best hope is to find a recording. Research I’ve done on Newspapers.com shows the episodes weren’t broadcast until season 2 began airing in July 1999, but had been dropped by the time the season finished premiering 6 months later. So mid-to-late-1999 recordings are what we should be looking for.
