Alright I’ll cut right to it. About a year and a half ago a friend and I were having a conversation about creepypastas. We both grew up watching guys like MrCreepypasta tell stories so we talked about some of our favorites and we remembered a lot of the same ones.
We both remembered this one story about some people that went on a camping trip and the main character losing his mind in the end but that was really all we remembered about the story. For some reason the images associated with certain stories have always stuck with me more than some details about the story and I remembered that one having footage of a wooded area with a run down house as the background video that these stories often have.
My friend remembered the story having a different visual than I did though. He remembered a terrifying face that slowly opened its eyes and smiled throughout the story.
We were both very interested in finding this visual because he said it really stuck with him and I wanted to see it. Eventually we found the story that we were both talking about. Turns out it’s called “Huntsville Camping Trip”. We found it on MrCreepypasta’s channel (after finally just watching all of the ones with camping in the title as that’s all we really remembered) but the visual was exactly what I remembered it being. A rundown house in a wooded area.
Then we set out on a journey to find the face that my friend remembered. We searched through a lot of other creepypasta centered channels that had told this same story because my friend remembered it being associated with “Huntsville Camping Trip”. After not finding anything for a good hour we decided to look through MrCreepypasta’s channel again, hoping to find the face in a thumbnail.
As soon as we check his channel again my friend says “oh my god, there it is.” In the thumbnail to a video that had been posted something like, a couple of days before this conversation took place.
I gotta admit, I see why the face stuck with him, the thing is really fucking creepy. But now that we had seen it, we had a bigger question. Where the fuck did this come from. The footage of it in the video was edited but we were able to screenshot it and get a reverse image search which led us to the actual original clip. A 2-3 second gif of this face (or mask I suppose).
After at least another hour of searching we still had nothing as far as where this thing actually came from, and we still don’t but we do know a little bit which I will lay out for you here in the hopes that it will help us identify where this is from.
1. When you reverse image search the actual gif, the oldest known instance of it on the internet is from a site called 4chandata.org (which even stranger appears to now be a site that teaches you how to bet on esports). It says it was originally posted to a page on the site titled “wsg-34” on February 20th 2013. It was then posted on the same site twice more under pages “wsg-34-7” and “wsg/creepy-gif-thread-a108448”. All of these link are long gone obviously with the sites apparent gambling rebrand. After this it gets posted to a few more dead sites, then to Reddit, then it seems like it’s just kind of all over from there.
2. We found out that it’s called a “Noh Mask”. This is apparently a Japanese mask used in theater and honestly all of them look pretty fuckin spooky already. We found out that this one is a Noh Mask because one of the reverse image results had “Noh” in the name somewhere. We searched “scary noh mask” on google images and boom. First picture that comes up. Still is, seriously go try, I’ll leave a link at the end of this post to an upload of it on Imgur but it really is that easy to find if you know what it’s called apparently. I have no idea if this helps us in anyway as we tried searching “horror movie with noh mask” and a bunch of different variations of that same thing as it’s seemingly the only word or concept we can actually tie to this thing. There are a few movies that seemingly fit the bill (japanese, horror, somehow involving a noh mask, black and white) so I’m gonna go ahead and list them here. I also haven’t seen any of them all the way through. I plan to start making my way through them but if anyone has seen them and can confirm or deny it’s in the movie you’ll save me the time.
Onibaba - This is the first result that comes up when you search “horror movie with noh mask” and upon first glance we thought we solved our mystery at this point. We skipped around this one and there’s no sight of the gif. Totally possible that we could have just missed it but I just skimmed through the whole thing again and it still doesn’t seem like it’s from this movie. Mainly I just don’t think this movie fits the same motif as the gif. Onibaba does have a pretty spooky mask but it’s very much traditional, it is an actual mask that does not move in any way. There’s a big scare at the very end of the movie where the main characters mother has the mask stuck to her face and when they finally get it off her face is covered in scars. If it would have appeared anywhere in this movie, I definitely thought it would have been here, but no dice. It is a very very different kind of scare from the one the gif presents. Doesn’t seem likely that this is the movie it’s from.
Ugetsu - Another one that seems possible only because it’s Japanese and black and white and is said to have scary scenes. But it’s mainly a fantasy and drama movie and as far as I can tell the scary aspects of the story are more psychological. Also, as far as I can tell a noh mask or something similar does not make an appearance in the film.
A Page of Madness - This is a Japanese silent film that is of course in black and white and appears to be horror (?) I honestly can’t tell because I’ve watched a bit of this one and I can not tell at all what’s going on. What I do know though, is that this movie is definitely insanely creepy and it definitely features noh masks. It’s also very grainy in quality due to its age, which could lead some credence to this being our movie, but once again, I’m not so sure. It definitely has noh masks, but they are very traditional in the sense that they are actual noh masks. The masks have stationary features and although very very creepy, are definitely nothing like what we see in the gif.
Some other movies that it might possibly be but that I’m not as confident in for whatever reason.
Kwaiden
Blind Beast
Snake Girl and the Silver-Haired Witch
Pulse
Like I said, I haven’t seen any of these all of the way through but over this next week I’m gonna dedicate a lot of time to trying to watch as many as I can. If anyone has seen any of them and can confirm whether or not it’s in one of these movies that would be greatly appreciated.
Since one of the first instances of this gif on the internet was a thread titled “creepy gifs” it’s fully possible that this was just made by someone to be just that. A creepy gif. It seems really nicely made for that if that’s what it is. I don’t know what it is about this thing but I swear I can’t look at it too long, it’s genuinely just unnerving. I’m honestly writing this now because I randomly saw it in my camera roll a little while back and I’ve just had it on my mind since. This is where me and my friend left off about 2 years ago but now I’m really desperately asking for some help here and a fresh pair of eyes that can hopefully help us to figure out where this thing came from.
Thanks for reading this far if you did. I know I wrote a bit of a novel there but I just wanted to make sure that you guys know absolutely everything that I do so we’re on the same page. Thanks again.
TL;DR: Have you seen this thing?

I have! Sorry you had to also.
Know where it’s from? Help us out!
