Hi!
I hope I’m in the right place - I haven’t visited these boards in ages, putting this here as it’s quite small and may well have a limited audience. I don’t know whether it will be found, but it’s always interested me!
I’m looking for Stabec. Stabec is a live-action educational programme that was shown to children in primary schools across Wales, intending to teach basic Welsh. I remember thinking it was some sort of cross between Doctor Who and Dora the Explorer. The main character, Stabec, was an English speaking alien (dressed in silver, with a silver face) and I think he lived in a portaloo which crashed in Wales(? - don’t know if this was shown or if I am imagining it). He meets some Welsh children and learns about Wales/the Welsh language.
I only ever watched it once at school, when I was in year 4 which would be about 2008? We didn’t have a TV at school or anything like that, I think my teacher had a DVD of it which he put on his computer. I think it was made specifically for schools and not for general television release.
I remember vaguely watching an episode where he goes to a cafe with the children and the children order either teisen (cake) or creision (crisps).
I can’t remember if I am imagining this bit but I’m sure he was confused, almost as if he was the audience surrogate, and I think the Welsh children would explain to him what they wanted, what the phrases meant etc. He then repeats the phrases for the viewers to copy (a bit like how Dora the Explorer does). There was also an episode about sports and I think they went to a swimming pool.
There have been threads made across Reddit looking for Stabec, which mention that he was ‘chased by a Darth Vader lookalike’ and if he did not understand a word would say ‘does not compute’. Facebook threads have shown that Stabec was played by the actor Daniel Evans, and it was filmed near Treorchy in Wales, produced by the Athrawon Bro, which AFAIK proves it was only created for educational/school use. It is also not a new production - while I watched it in 2008, it was apparently first shown during the 1980s and 1990s.
But that is where my search ends. There’s nothing on YouTube, and nothing on the net other than the Reddit and Facebook threads. Help?
Diolch! (Thank you!)
