Inkheart is a good one, from what I've been told the series has a really good plot that would lend itself nicely into film. But sadly doesn't have Harry Potter popularity, so no sequels were made. (Reading Cornelia Funke based Mo on Brendan Frasser himself and his reaction absolutely melted my heart). The Golden Compass, knowing the controversy behind it is much more instersting than the movie itself.
Spiderwick, as kid who went to the movies to see it wasn't at all appealing at least to me, the story had a really downer tone and I felt disgusted at all the gore, the only thing I liked were the flower fairies that were like 1 minute onscreen. I wouldn't be suprised if other kids had similar opinions.
It's been 17 years and I'm sad we didn't get a Series of Unfortunate movie sequel, I've only seen season 1 of the Netflix show while it was good, it doesn't have that disctinct visual style that makes the movie so rewatchable despite an okay script. If it only focused on adapating the first book or combing the first 2 would have given it a better reception, rather than the frakenstein mess that is trying put all the first three into a cohesive movie.
Golden Compass actually performed well overseas but because New Line in their infinite wisdom had made the boneheaded decision to sell off the foreign distribution rights to the film they didn't see a single penny of the overseas earnings and the resulting domestic failure of the film was a big reason why New Line ended up getting merged with WB.
Yeah, now that I think about it, I think Spiderwick adapted parts from all of the books, so I don't know about a sequel there. I liked the style of the movie, but not sure it would hold up today. There was a sequel series that was actually released around the time of the first movie, I don't know if those were ever intended to be adapted.
Indeed, the way they did the ASoUE was SO bizarre, and the script was "okay" but the visual style was SPECTACULAR. I will say the actual "Lemony Snicket" commentary for the movie on the DVD bonus features is well recommended and I used to even watch the credits for fun when I was younger.
Oh goodness, I had FORGOTTEN about the Golden Compass, you could tell that the studio desperately wanted their own Harry Potter, but like, that's NOT His Dark Materials. Much like the production of Divergent, the production behind the movie turned out to be more interesting than the movie itself. I have zero idea why they sold off the foreign distribution rights, I suppose the trend of "make it marketable for the Chinese/Russian/Brazilian/whatever" audiences was more of a post 2010 phenomenom??
