Me and my friends are massive Nick fans, so naturally we've been wanting to intern there once we graduate high school. One of us asked our counselor if the school knew of any internship opportunities and sure enough, he sent her a few PDFs. One described internships working in Nick's tape libraries and it could be the answer to lost Nickelodeon media!
Here are some excerpts that sound interesting:
"The Operations library intern will leave with an understanding of the library, the promo delivery process from concept to completion and be extensively exposed to
the ongoing digital work flow expansion project."
"We are the Creative Resource Library under Global Consumer Products Operations. We are in charge of archiving, cataloging and storing all finished creative projects for Nickelodeon."
When I first read through the document, I thought, "Obviously this library will be 90% SpongeBob. It probably won't have anything cool." Then I read more closely, and the Creative Resource Library does specifically indicate they are "archiving, cataloging and storing all finished creative projects for Nickelodeon." So the "Nickelodeon vault" really does exist, and it could contain everything ever made for Nickelodeon. My next question was "When did the library start archiving everything Nick made? It won't be of any use if it was just created this year or something." After some quick research I found someone's biography that used to work for the same library:
studio.florida.universalstudios.com/publicity/production-group-bios/jennifer-lenhart-belawski/index.html
Text of interest: "the video tape library for Nickelodeon which was, at that time, on the lot at Universal Orlando Resort."
"After Nickelodeon Studios closed the majority of their studio production in 2001"
Using this, we can be sure the tape library has been in existence since before 2001, and its referral as a tape library indicates that their older content is stored using VHS tapes. The internship PDF also calls the library a tape library, but it would make sense that the newer things are recorded via other means. Now my final questions, to all of you, are:
* If we actually get in, which lost media should we specifically look for? It looks like almost nothing is off-limits, since the library works to store everything Nick-produced. Of course, we'd probably have to take baby steps as to not look suspicious, like asking our supervisors questions like "What's the oldest show you have archived?" - with that being said, no extra-long lists, please. We need to prioritize (we won't have the option to look for every lost Nick show ever).
* If I or one of my friends gets the job, should I/they plan to come back to this forum in the summer and try to describe the vault or provide pictures? I've already had my fair share of daydreams about the place and I assume that you guys are interested in knowing at least the scope of the library. Even if we're not provided access to the vault's contents, we'll probably be able to tell you all how it's divided, for ex. "Currently-airing" / "Not currently airing" or by decade/year of production.
Some disclaimers:
* No, we don't know where exactly the libraries are. The college relations assistant in charge of approving library internships is based in New York, so it seems like that's where it is located...but don't make any assumptions.
* We're not sure if the library contains anything Nickelodeon-branded that wasn't made for TV, but it doesn't look possible. Video games and the like are most likely not going to be there, so you shouldn't ask about them.
* If none of us secures the internship, then that's no reason to post angry responses when the time comes. You could always try to get an internship at the libraries yourself!
