For those interested in the early history of rock and roll, here's an interesting lost song out there.
To start, Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley and his Comets is one of the best selling records of all time widely credited with bringing rock and roll to the mainstream. Except few know that Bill's version was not the original. The song's writer, Jimmy DeKnight actually pitched it to another Philadelphia band, Sonny Dae and his Knights less than a year prior.
Most details about Sonny Dae's group have been lost to time unfortunately. This is the only record they made. Here's where the lost media comes in; no one's ever uncovered the B-side of their sole release, "Moving Guitar." Despite being said to be a "local hit", the record has rarely been seen for sale.
So if you're crate digging and come across this one, just know that it's a coveted rarity that hasn't been digitized yet.
Something that gives me hope that the master tapes may still be out there; more recent releases have released "Rock Around the Clock" with a never before heard introduction by the studio engineer.
We can consider this one "mostly found." A recording of the shellac record being played was quietly posted to YouTube: youtu.be/vso6fOJKzwk?si=Y7nUBulFVh6Lp5tH&t=33 Not great quality, but it's now officially out there.
