We are all pretty familiar with the majority of desktop backgrounds from Microsoft Windows, as many of them were stock photos from Corbis, Photodisc, & Getty Images, or sometimes commissions by unknown artists from Microsoft. But before Microsoft Windows got desktop backgrounds sourced from stock photos, there were a few CD-ROMs from the Early to Mid-1990s containing stock photos. One of these series of CD-ROMs was Aris Entertainment's MediaClips series of CD-ROMs.
These were a series of CD-ROMs containing a series of stock photos based around a specific subject, ranging from mountains, underwater photography, tiles & patterns, to space exploration, to even American structures.
The CD-ROMs released in the MediaClips series from Aris Entertainment were as follows:
- Americana
- Animal Kingdom
- Batik Designs
- Business Backgrounds
- Full Bloom
- Island Designs (2 disc set)
- Jets & Props (2 disc set)
- MPC Wizard (Windows Only)
- Majestic Places
- Money, Money, Money!
- New York, NY
- Space Odyssey
- The Best of MediaClips
- Tropical Rainforest
- Wild Places
- World View
- Video Cube series
- Vintage Aloha
If your familiar with this series of CD-ROMs, then you probably seen that some textures from id Software's 1993 First Person Shooter game DOOM were sourced from stock photos from some of these CD-ROMs, which is noticeable on the sky textures in most of the levels. The sequel DOOM II Hell on Earth from 1994 also had textures sourced from this series of CD-ROMs, including the sky textures.
Unfortunately, only a few of these CD-ROMs from the MediaClips series have been uploaded by a few Internet Archive users, and as such the remaining CD-ROMs are currently unavailable on abandonware websites other than the aforementioned Internet Archive. In addition very few Amazon & eBay shopping listings have this series of CD-ROMs on sale.
If you have the remaining CD-ROMs from the MediaClips series from Aris Entertainment, and if you are willing buy one of these CD-ROMs & upload them on Internet Archive or other places, let me know about it.
