Background
In 2000, Sega partnered with MTV to promote their upcoming game, Space Channel 5, for the Sega Dreamcast. Music and dancing were the highlights of the game and fit the aesthetics and branding of MTV very well. The partnership pushed to market the main character of the game, Ulala, and MTV had her present an award at that year's MTV Music Awards show. MTV must have really liked Ulala, as behind the scenes, MTV wanted to use Ulala as a "virtual anchor." The premise was that on a weekly basis, Ulala would appear on MTV during commercials and give viewers updates on celebrity and music news. The series never took off, however the pilot used to pitch it leaked online in 2006.
The Video
The pilot was first uploaded to YouTube on May 6, 2006 by user NeoGoemon. The pilot was shot offscreen, so it was not a direct capture. It featured Ulala walking through Spaceport 9 from the game and she gives updates on pop-culture related news. Apollo Smile, Ulala's then voice actress, returned to voice the reporter. The main theme of the game, Mexican Flyer, can also be heard in the background. After the pilot finished, the video plays for an additional second and an unidentified man could be heard talking, possibly about to comment on the pilot.
The video remained on YouTube for many years, and if you search on Google, you can find posts from around the web linking the video and discussing it.
When did it become lost?
A thread on the r/ObscureMedia subreddit was made about the pilot on March 17, 2020. No one in the comments mention anything about the video being unwatchable, so we can assume that the video was still viewable at that time. The video must have been removed from YouTube less than a year ago.
Going to the original video on YouTube, it explicitly states that the video has been blocked by Viacom, MTV's owner, confirming the legitimacy of the video.
What remains?
Fortunately a mirror of the video remains...kinda. YouTube user Io Arcade uploaded a video on June 14, 2019 that retains the entire audio of the pilot. At the end, the unidentified man can also be heard. However, this is not a video of the original pilot, but rather various screenshots of it put together. Oddly, the aspect ratio is that of an iPhone, as if the video was uploaded directly from an iPhone capture.
It's great that we have surviving existence of the pilot, namely the audio and some images, but what about the original video? Finding the full video of the pilot is what I would like to find again, as the "footage" from the mirror isn't great at all; it's akin to a slideshow. To not mention the aspect ratio is all wrong and things are cut off.
Where could one start to search for the video? NeoGoemon seems to be inactive from YouTube and Io Arcade seems to have directly uploaded their video from their mobile phone and probably just recorded NeoGoemon's video from their iPhone.
