Hello! I've been looking for this VHS tape for years with no luck. I can describe it very vividly, but despite this it's never turned up nor does anyone seem to recollect what I am describing.
Here is what I know/can remember:
My church had its own library back in the day, they had a whole section of kids VHS tapes to check out, a good mix of Christian, (think Gerber, Veggietales) and secular films, (think Disney movies, live action, etc.) I am confident that this particular video wasn't a christian kids show.
I would have been watching this in the late 90's, but would maybe date the video itself to sometime around 1995.
It was essentially a "How it's made" tape for kids, starring a puppet pelican dressed as a private eye detective. He was gray, or a muted blue/purple maybe, with the typical muppet style eyelids. He was a well-made puppet, and the quality of the video was pretty high budget. So I have a hunch this wasn't just something local.
The video showed how a wide variety of stuff was made, such as chocolate, baseballs and bats, how cherries were harvested....perhaps even Ice Cream?
Each bit was introduced with a skit from the pelican, spoofing old detective films. These skits were in black and white, with voiceover narration from the pelican in his office. There was also skits with the pelican on sets or out in public, these were in color though. He may have also had a human sidekick for the outdoor/public segments...a dopier guy...perhaps in his 20's, early 30's.
A very specific memory I can recall was from a skit in a portion about how ice cream/chocolate was made, in which the pelican actually spots a girl pelican, (very similar puppet to him but maybe pink) and instantly falls in love with her...he thinks he missed his chance to see her again but in a car later on in the story he sees her stopped at the red light next to him. She mouths something to him he doesn't understand and drives off. I believe he retreats to an ice cream parlor to eat his troubles away, which then leads into the segment on how ice cream is made.
Another specific memory that may help is that the cherry processing segment was narrated by a bunch of kids voicing the cherries. (i.e. when the cherries were sorted out and thrown down a big slide, the kids would cry out, "woooooah" and stuff as if the cherries were having fun on the machinery.
I can try to answer any questions you guys may have...perhaps someone out there remembers this too!
