So basically, in the beginning of this movie we meet the brother of the main character (Jimmy) - a dead guy who's in the ground trying to dig his way out while talking to the audience. He goes on to watch and help Jimmy throughout the film, last appearing about 20 mins before the end, in a scene of him with Jimmy on a train, then outside of it watching it leave. While he says goodbye to Jimmy in this scene, it seems weird that he never talks to the audience again, given that's where he started. The first scene definitely felt like the set up of bookends, so I wasn't surprised when I found out there was indeed another scene of him addressing the audience.
Wikipedia says this scene was televised and never put on the Australian DVD. There has since been other DVD and Blu-ray releases in multiple countries and I've seen someone claim to one of the releases having it, though I haven't been able to find which. Then I read somewhere else that this scene only played at Sundance, where after showing it they decided they wanted to cut some stuff for time, and the audience didn't love this undead character (as the only supernatural element in an otherwise grounded film), so they cut it before releasing. Critics and audiences liked the movie, but also thought this character wasn't needed.
While I agree with that, it's not as though they got rid of the character completely, so I think cutting the final scene actually did more harm than good. If you're still gonna have the first scene of him speaking to the audience, and still have him appearing throughout the film, why only cut the scene that wraps up that part of the story? I haven't been able to find it online. I would love to see this ending if anyone could find it.
