Ever since I found this video on Twitter (link here) while working on my Electric Dreams miniseries (coming soon, will link here when it goes live), I've become curious as to the origin of this dancing Coca-Cola can toy. Because toys are also lost media. Except in this case, what's lost is information about this toy. When was it made? Who made it? Why did someone think of making this?
There are separate regular Coca-Cola (New Coke?) and Coca-Cola Classic versions:
There's also a Diet Coke version:
And a Coca-Cola light version:
I found this video which shows the toy with its box. I asked the uploader who or what company made the toy, but given the upload date, a reply is unlikely. The uploader says that the can came out in 1989, but I cannot verify that.
I found this dancing Diet Pepsi can (the official name of which is "Movin' and Groovin' Can") made by Meritus Industries, Inc. with a copyright date of 1991. Maybe Meritus also made the dancing Coke can:
They came out around the middle of 1989 and were available at places like Spencer's gifts and Hot Topic in the US. The one I have has a price sticker on it for $9.99. I don't remember when I bought it, but it is still sitting on a shelf in my closet, and hasn't been touched in almost 30 years.
