I swear I remember this as a kid but can’t find the name of it or any trace of it anywhere. This was in the early-mid 2000s this was around, I saw one episode of it and read part of a book version (which was just a novelized version of the show) I don’t remember much of it but the few details I do remember I remember very clearly
1. There was a mostly (or entirely) African American cast
2. Focused on a sizeable group of kids, living in an urban area
3. Main characters ( I think) was a boy and his little sister
4. The two main kids had an overweight mother who was always on the phone, it was a corded phone and a running joke was how the cord would just keep going so she would be like in a mall and the cord would still be stretched out so she could keep talking
5. The other kid I remember was always dirty, think Pigpen from Charlie Brown, except for his white sneakers and a silver sneaker necklace, which were sparkling clean
6. At some point all the kids are in a pool and the dirty kid jumps in turning the water dark brown, one girl says “don’t you ever take a bath?” To which he replies “what do you think I’m doing now?”
7. At one point the two main kids and their mother go shopping for clothes, the mother choosing to shop at a bargain store in the basement of the mall, they go down an escalator, the phone cord stretched behind them as the mother talks, and there’s a massive brawl over the clothes in the bargain store. The mom goes in and starts fighting as well. She comes out of the fight with a ripped dress handing it to the daughter saying “here you wanted a pink dress” the girl says “but Mama it’s torn in half!” “Well good, then it’ll be half price”
That’s all I can remember of it and unfortunately it hasn’t helped me find anything on my own. Hoping this’ll jog someone else’s memory! I’m pretty sure this was one of those one or two season only deals, and it might have also gotten buried for its portrayal of POC in the cities, looking back I can totally see how it’s actually pretty offensive at times which might explain why it’s so hard to find. If any of this sounded familiar please let me know!! I want to know I didn’t imagine this whole thing!!
