Seeing that were getting near to the release of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, I thought I'd talk about this seeing that no one hasn't touched upon it.
So there was an updated version of the 1997 Sega light gun arcade game, The Lost World: Jurassic Park that was in a large full motion theater with an 80-inch screen, improved speakers, gun recoil, and even air blows during the T-Rex boss and was only avaliable in Sega's Amusement venues including Joypolis and Gameworks. But the big main feature in this version of the game is that it has been updated to follow the movie closer due to AM3 only having access to a few references and the script during development and with the tight deadline especially with some of the dinosaurs in the game not being featured in the final version of the movie.
Differences from the original and Special Edition include
-Stages being rearranged to closely follow the plot of the film more. The trailer scene (Stage 4 in the original release) was moved to the beginning of the game. From there, players can choose to take the Jungle Route or the Lakeside Route to reach the InGen Lab.
-A boss level featuring Carnotaurus, a dinosaur that wasn't included in the final film, was cut and replaced with a more film-accurate final level where the players must defeat a Tyrannosaurus rampaging through San Diego.
-Both players now share the same life bar.
The only images I could find of it was this 2005 photo upload from a Picssr user named MrJolly your seeing right now and one from SegaRetro but still no photos of the gameplay itself.
Hey, just wanted to dig up this thread. You're not alone in your search. I was really into searching for this game a few years ago but it fell off my radar. A recent event has re-ignited my search so I figured I'd post what I have here. There are a few more screenshots that I found on System16, and in the January 1998 Sega Saturn magazine (linked in the segaretro article). The biggest visual difference from identifying Special compared to the standard Lost World in screenshots is the life meter. The standard game will have the health boxes, where as Special has the life bar.
Here is a photo of the outside. It looks pretty different from the pictures we have seen before. I think it might be a marquee in front of the machine. I say this because we can see parts of the 2 TVs attached to the cabinet in the background, and the black pipe structure of the machine (Look at the 2 tvs in your photo). Some important features are additional gameplay photos, albeit in terrible quality. There are 2 pictures on the left on the information card. I haven't gotten around to translating the text on there. One picture appears to be people sitting in the seat (which there is a clearer picture of below), and another screenshot of the T-Rex fight in San Diego. The TV on the right appears to have gameplay footage too, as identified by the life bar at the bottom. Unfortunately that is all I can really see. I'm still trying to find where these photos came from. They look like they were scanned out of some article, or a photo was taken of a screen (note the scan lines).
The inside doesnt look too interesting. The seat arrangement reminds me of House of the Dead 4 Special. Unfortunately I cant really get any additional information based on the interior photos.
An additional photo of the seat. This is why I believe the outside and this inside photo were taken out of an article or off of a screen due to the same scan lines in photo 1. Couple this with the red/yellow box with indistinguishable text on it (perhaps View Larger? meaning it could be from a website?) Also worth noting that the seats in these photos look different from each other even though they were in the same page on System16. Note how the seat in the above photo is more upright than the below photo, and it doesn't have that "arch" over the tops of the seats. The above photo matches the interior seen in your photo as well. Therefore, I have no clue what the below photo could be of.
Of course reverse image searching these leads nowhere, but that is where my search stopped.
Some of the things on my to-do list include:
Find the article/website those photos came from. Checking various magazine scans about Sega or arcade games.
data mining the standard Lost World ROM to see if I can find any un-used textures that match up with the few screenshots we have in the event any data is on the original ROM.
Looking for old photos/videos of Joypolis in Japanese
System16 has a ton of photos/info on rare/obscure arcade games. I wonder if we could reach out to the site owner and see if there's any way they could tell us where those photos came from.
I would love to remain optimistic but unfortunately this game came out over 20 years ago. Finding someone who worked on the game or worked at Joypolis during Special's run who could tell us where the game went to simply isn't possible because of how much time has passed.
