So I kept seeing this photo being included in some of those "2000s webcore aesthetic" pages on Tumblr showing some sort of Hello Kitty virtual pet program, the photo originates from a Japanese virtual pet/email client program called "超図解 PostPet 2001" made by PetWORKs and Sony Network Communications.
I began looking deeper into this and found that while PostPet 2001 has been archived and documented, there's no other info regarding this Hello Kitty version besides this one screenshot. There's no info on if it was a free download or something that had to be purchased, when it was released or what features it has. I went through the Wayback Machine and multiple fansites about PostPet but couldn't find anything about this on there either.
While I was looking for info about the PP2001 content, I found that a later version of PostPet (PostPet V3) also has Hello Kitty content referred to as "Hello Kitty meets PostPet V3" that had more info about it available.
This was created by PetWORKs as part of KITTY EX (an exhibition event for the 30th anniversary of Hello Kitty) back in July 2004 where according to the about page, it was initially only available for certain periods of time at various venues where KITTY EX was taking place at, it also seems like you had to email the addresses provided in advance in order to get access to use it. This addon was also seemingly made without involvement from Sony as the page warns users not to contact Sony's official support service regarding the pet.
A year later in 2005, PetWORKs later offered the addon to be downloaded from their website directly, but only for a limited time starting in March and lasting til April. On a later screenshot of the page in December, there's a notice stating that it was no longer available for download, the page stayed online in this state until it was taken down around mid-2007.
I did find one site that had reported on this addon and also hosts the files for download, however they're locked behind an account login that's required to download files from the site, which I couldn't find anyway to sign up for an account nor do they really say what account is needed to be signed into to access the files.
Given that the services that the earlier versions of PostPet needed in order to operate are most likely long discontinued, I don't know if these would still work properly or at all.
