In the summer of 1978, Columbia Pictures released a teaser trailer for Neil Simon's California Suite which featured no footage from the movie. The only known evidences of its existence are this 1981 New York Times article
Columbia wanted a one minute teaser trailer for ''California Suite.'' Because the trailer was to be attached to Columbia's summer movies and ''California Suite,'' which would be released the next Christmas, wasn't completed and Mr. Kuehn wasn't allowed to use any of the actors, he cleverly turned his disadvantages to advantages: he created a trailer by shooting the distinctive luggage of the stars, who were supposedly checking into the Beverly Hills Hotel. Audience annoyance at seeing a trailer for a movie that wouldn't be in theaters for six months was defused with the line, ''They're all checking into Neil Simon's 'California Suite,' but they won't be out until Christmas.''
Classiest movie trailer of the year is the teaser for the Christmas release of Neil Simon's "California Suite." Not one of the many big stars is shown, only shots of their luggage arriving at the Beverly Hills Hotel, where the comedy takes place.
This trailer was never released on home video nor is it anywhere to be found online. I'm a sucker for a good teaser trailer, especially one with no film footage. I'm mostly just putting this out into the universe in the hopes that it'll pop up one day.
