so i know the lost media community is always pretty passionate about spongebob lost media, and i’m honestly surprised that this one hasn’t gotten more attention— regarding the spongebob cartoon creator.
it has a page on the LMW (https://lostmediawiki.com/SpongeBob_Cartoon_Creator_(partially_found_original_version_of_Flash_game;_2008-2013), which i’m grateful for— but clearly the original functional version of the game is still lost. to summarize, it was a nick flash game that existed wherein you could make your own “cartoons”— characters could talk with speech bubbles and do motions such as running, waving, dancing, etc, with a variety of backgrounds. you could also create your own fish character to add in to the game as well. it was fairly broken though, and i remember even when this game was up that it was very buggy and hard to play and work with. i couldn’t view my past work unless it somehow ended up on the front page for everybody to see (which seemed almost random and only happened once to me— it was titled “the krusty krab break”. it was supposed to be a commercial, but the filter was heavy and wouldn’t let me say that). once you published it, unless it somehow ended up on the front page, it could not be accessed again as i believe the open or the save feature was consistently broken. i don’t remember which one, i just remember i couldn’t access my cartoons.
this is what i think exacerbated the fact that notably, it seems most all of the cartoons produced are lost as well. which, yeah, i guess isn’t a Big loss, but it’s like losing a piece of artwork you made in the 1st grade. sure it’s not the end of the world, but it’s sucks to lose something you made as a kid. is it historical or groundbreaking? not necessarily, but it was part of a lot of peoples’ childhoods and it sucks to disappear. in any case, attempting to search it up “spongebob cartoon creator” now just results in a comic maker game, distinct from the original format of the first game. it’s just a single page comic, obviously not a short film or etc.
have you guys ever played this game? it was a crucial part of my childhood playing flash games on nick.com, especially spongebob ones. i do feel like it’s absolutely out there, somewhere on some obscure website that reposts nick flash games or etc. as for the lost cartoons— a smaller chance, but you never know. there could be some random archive of them somewhere, maybe. what do you all think?
