everybody who was alive and well back then remembers way back in the late 00s/early 10s when MMOGs & MMORPGs were all the rage and as such companies created them frequently and often. however, a good amount of them didn’t stick, whether due to obscurity and lack of interest (deeqs, which i’m not sure if that has a thread or a page either) or the owners of the game neglecting upkeep on it and eventually shutting down servers (literally any disney MMOG/MMORPG). kung fu panda world was more or less both.
i can’t remember what year it was since i was apparently incorrect with thinking it was 2008, but i remember kung fu panda themed happy meals existed around the time of the game’s release that also had promo codes on happy meals for one month of free membership. the game was fairly straightforward but very enjoyable— you play as either a panda, tiger, or a monkey, in your quest to become the dragon warrior. naturally, a house is also included to decorate and you play a variety of games and go on a myriad of quests to go from belt to belt which would display around your character’s waist. not sure what happens when you reach the top level, but regardless. i specifically remember a very fun game in which your character has to fight off baddies mirroring the minions from the movies (such as the wolves) while traversing environments using a weapon. you could use your fists, a bo staff, nunchucks, or a club. if i remember correctly, you’d pick better weapons up along the way, so you’d start with your fists and end up with the club at the end of it, while being able to switch them around. also interestingly, your character had to have a unique name. if somebody else had the name you wanted, you couldn’t use it. i ended up naming my character Xingg, who was a green tiger, because of course Xing was taken.
sadly, this game was very and extremely broken. any minor toontown glitches about walking into the gray area via any kind of no clip zones is child’s play compared to how broken this was. the big thing about it was the free membership codes given out on happy meals were plentiful and it wasn’t a “one use and it’s done” thing— you could look up free membership codes online and get infinite membership without paying for a LONG time. it took me until the end of the game’s lifespan to reach a point wherein i ran out of free codes but i just started a new account in which the codes worked on there. because of that, it’s easy to surmise it wasn’t terribly profitable. (i also recall a glitch where there was an item you could buy for one coin but sell for twenty, essentially enabling an infinite money glitch, while less damaging to the game itself than the free membership.)
a bunch of different screenshots exist on the web, but to my knowledge there’s been no official reason for why the game shut down, and much less an existing actual playable version of the game after it got shut down. the url, kungfupandaworld.com, now just redirects to the kung fu panda section on the dreamworks website. the developers are HumaNature studios, while their website doesn’t have a lot of details and they don’t even still lists kfpw as a game they developed (which i understand). there’s a contact box available on the developers which i just submitted an entry for asking for more details on why it got shut down and perhaps if they could share anything, but i just did that a couple minutes ago so who knows when we’ll see results.
i’m sure a good amount of you have memories of this, as up until the end of it i always remember it being fairly popular. i just truly think the mcdonald’s happy meal codes are what did them in. what do you guys think? do you have any thoughts on how we might be able to access this game? any possible leads?
