I Haven't seen any discussion on this and I'd really like it to get found. So, quick rundown: In 2002, Lucasarts were planning a game meant to a sequel to the first game, Hit the Road. Due to a dying market in adventure games, it was cancelled roughly 2/3 in production and March 3rd, 2004, was canceled. Notable details include Steve Purcell being sent test animations a displaying them on his desktop and the original voices of Sam and Max were set to return.
I actually had a magazine with a multi-page article all about this game & reviving the franchise with screenshots & an interview with former LucasArts staff who were with TellTale, but I tossed all my old magazines out when I was spring cleaning because we were talking about moving & downsizing & not becoming hoarders like my uncle. All I can tell you is that the article came out around the time that Telltale was developing their first Sam & Max game. Some magazines upload complete backlogs of their issues magazines in pdf form & I know it was one of 3 magazines from the time that focused entirely on PC gaming.
I remember re-reading it years after TellTale had wrapped season 2 & had no plans for a 3rd season & wishing I could play the lost game.
