Hello, I regret to inform everyone today that the Waluigi toenail flash game is, in fact, not a hoax. For context, here's the article by Nintendo Power:

Anyway, I remember seeing some debate awhile ago whether or not Nintendo Power made this up just for the kick of it. They did not.

If you put this link into the Wayback Machine, an swf file will begin downloading on your computer: mariotennis.com/toenails_coming.swf

I was able to view it on Ruffle's site, but for anyone who doesn't want to go through the hassle, here's the image:

The game is still lost, (un)fortunately. This is only a preview, but this does confirm that it exists. While combing through URLs, I found these three catalogued:

mariotennis.com/toenails.swf

mariotennis.com/paint_the_lines.swf

mariotennis.com/deface_painting.swf

It's pretty obvious what toenails is. But I'm unsure what the other two could be. deface_painting was also on the "waluigi.com" domain. All three links lead to dead ends, even when you put them through the Wayback Machine. So, there's a possibility there's other lost Mario Tennis flash games besides the Waluigi Toenails one.

Holy crap I remember someone bringing this game to my attention years ago, hearing it wasn't actually made exactly like you said MediaMonster and now here we are with a preview of the game.

I'm honestly more interested in the story behind why anyone thought to make this game rather than finding the game itself. Even if it only existed as a joke in the magazine I never understood why this concept was chosen as an alternative to a Tennis game. You'd think it would be like Waluigi's Dance Off or Fashion Show or something slightly related to competition.

Seems to me that the people who made this game wanted to have a little fun with this new "Waluigi" character who never appeared in anything before Mario Tennis. That or someone at Nintendo has a pretty sick sense of humor.

TheCracksOverhead has an excellent guide on how to get started on the Wayback Machine (see: here) but I wanted to bring attention to the CDX search, as that was the method I used to find this .swf file.

This is the example link that TCO provided (There's a separate link for sub-domains in the thread):

Replace "example.com" with anything you wish. In this instance, I used "waluigi.com" and "mariotennis.com", which is how I was able to find those files. Again, TCO goes into more detail about the nuances in the thread, but these are the basics.

I wanted to bring this up because 1. It's very possible I could've missed something and 2. This method could be used to find other .swf files on Nintendo's website that are currently not documented/archived. Again, there's a separate link you can use for sub-domains, so you don't have to spend hours searching through "nintendo.com" trying to find flash files.

Please note that, although some URLs may be cataloged through CDX search, they may not be archived. (It seems like Nintendo was using "waluigi.com" to redirect to their main site during the Wii era, so there's a lot of miscellaneous URLs thrown in there.) For the Mario Tennis/Waluigi flash games, the files you're looking for should be fairly old, at least by internet standards.

One thing I found was something called "Waluigi_bio.swf", which if you ask me was definitely gonna be the text that was supposed to be on the "Waluigi.com" website. But unfortunately, the WayBack machine isn't really any help in finding that, since putting "http://www.mariotennis.com/waluigi_bio.swf" into it just brings you to a 404 page for Mario's Power Tennis, dated 2005, which was way after this whole website thing was created. I'd love to know what this description contained, since the image supplied on the Nintendo Power article is too blurry to make out the full thing.
