Three nights ago, I had an unusually very vivid dream about a nonexistent lost Disney movie. The film was called “Hamlet 3” and was the third installment in a series of films also called “Hamlet”. The first film was released in 1993 and met with critical and audience acclaim. The second movie came out in 1997 and was seen as not as great but still perfectly good and serviceable. Many fans would naturally be excited about a third movie.
But when “Hamlet 3” was released in theaters in 2003, it not only flopped at the box office but was critically panned. It was seen as a major failure and blemish on Disney’s reputation. Because of this, it was never released on DVD or on any streaming services. There was no reference of the film ever existing from Disney. It was also a production nightmare with many different people behind the scenes butting heads to get the movie out by its deadline of Christmas 2003.
For whatever reason in this dream, I had completely forgotten about the movie up until it randomly popped up in my head. Disney tried so hard to keep the embarrassment of this movie under wraps that I had never known about it. But now I wanted answers. I had seen it just once in the theater in 2003 with my grandfather. What I could remember was that he disliked the movie so much, he left the theater to go to his car. Since he passed away, I couldn’t ask him what he remembered about the film. My boyfriend had also gone to see it as a child with his dad. So we went to him for some questions. He told us he couldn’t recall much of the film but did remember people throwing popcorn at the screen, booing and leaving the theater in the middle of the movie. This same thing was said to have happened at several other movie theaters across America.
My boyfriend and I set out on a mission to find “Hamlet 3” by any means necessary. Our search started with the internet. Very little clips or screen caps of the movie were found. But we did find the movie’s poster, it’s Wikipedia and IMDB pages and a review Nostalgia Critic had done of the film. In his review, he noted that copies of the film are incredibly rare and that he only had his because an anonymous fan had mailed it to him. The IMDB page said the movie had a 2/10 rating and many reviews were about what a disgrace the movie was to the “Hamlet” series. There were very few positive reviews, some of which called the film an “underrated classic”.
After doing our internet search, we decided that somewhere or somebody had to have a copy of this movie. We set out to every bargain store, flea market and thrift store in our city to find one. I can’t remember if we were successful or not but I do recall remembering more about the movie as our search went on. Details about the actual movie that I can recall from the dream are fuzzy. But there were a few different points that did stick out. They are as follows:
-The movie was done in traditional 2D hand-drawn animation. It was one of the last Disney movies to be animated in this style and it’s failure was considered to be one of the reasons why Disney stopped using that kind of animation.
-There were a mixture of pre-existing Disney characters as well as characters that my dream had completely made up. I recall seeing Belle and Mickey Mouse. I don’t know what they were doing in the movie but perhaps were cameo appearances of some kind.
-Two of the original characters I remember were the Strawberry Princess and the Cherry Fairy. Apparently in “Hamlet 3” the writers had mixed the two up and this was one of many mistakes the film was notorious for.
-The first two “Hamlet” movies were known and loved for having classical music soundtracks. But for some reason in the third one they decided to switch the classical music to early 2000s teen pop. They originally wanted a soundtrack by Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys and/or NSYNC. However, they refused and the soundtrack was instead done by Jessica Simpson and 98 Degrees.
-There was a new character who performed raps in certain scenes. There was also a scene in the snow where the characters had a snowball fight.
-Disney wanted as many people to forget about this movie as possible. I can’t remember if it’s theatrical release had been cut short as well but I imagine it did. Most people acknowledged it to be awful, but it did have a very small, cult fan base on the internet with people asking for it to be put on DVD or streaming.
That’s most of what I can remember of this dream. I don’t even know if this will be of interest to anybody but I found it pretty fascinating. If this was real, it would probably be one of the most notorious cases of lost media ever. Let me know what y’all think.
