A few years ago, I went to a garage sale in my neighborhood. The man who was there, around in his mid 50’s, was doing the sale. As I was looking around, a VHS tape with the label titled “The Midnight Snack 1945” caught my eyes. I grabbed it and walked up to the man and questioned what it was. He said that when he lived in California, his grandfather had helped produce some of the Warner Bros Looney Tunes cartoons. One of them was a canceled Sylvester cartoon titled “The Midnight Snack”. It was in production after the release of “Life With Feathers” and he was able to record it onto a VHS tape. He said that this is the only remnant of it and no other copies exist. He stated that the short was canceled for unknown reasons, even his grandfather never knew why. They were told to never tell anybody about the cartoon. So, I bought the tape, brought it home, and watched it. It is only rough animations with no color or sound.
The story starts off with Sylvester lying in his bed. A clock on the wall is ticking, as suddenly Sylvester’s stomach growls. He gets up, looks down, and falls back asleep. Then, it growls again as suddenly he thinks of a cabinet with delicious sweets in the kitchen. He gets up, slowly walks through a doorway, and trots into the kitchen. He creeps over in front of the cabinet and slowly opens it to see large cakes, macaroons, ice cream, chocolates, cupcakes, and many, many more sweets. He grabs treat after treat, scarfing each one down. Then, with a full stomach, Sylvester makes his way back to his room. The screen fades to black, and reopens in the morning, with Sylvester laying on the bed with gas-relief pills and indigestion relief pills, as he lays there with a large, boated stomach. Then the clip ends
I’m guessing this is the only VHS tape of this short ever. It’s only around two minutes long. I wonder why this short was canceled.
