Back in 2009, a short film called Gehara was Broadcasted on the Japanese network NHK Productions. It was a parody of the Godzilla films, even making a few references to it and borrowing stock music from Akira Ifukube, the composer of the original sound track. You can watch it on dailymotion (or find a slightly better torrent on rutracker) but what is lesser known is the extras that were included on the Blu-Ray version of the movie. There is a making-of extra included alongside the movie that is much longer than the film (totaling at 62:50). Included with that is an audio commentary with the Writer Jun Miura, Project Supervisor Shinji Higuchi and Director Kiyotaka Taguchi , Papooo!'s Monster Movie Geharha Special in HD (48:25) and the trailer for Gehara in HD (1:04). All of this was sourced from a review written here with some screenshots of these extra. There are pictures of the production uploaded to the wikizilla site as well.
I can't seem to find these extras anywhere from the small time I've researched nor really a place that has a copy of it in stock (that isn't 24,000+ yen). There is this Blu-ray copy listed on amazon over here (if anyone wants to pay for it). Could maybe contact the person who uploaded the pictures to the wikizilla page to see if they still have their copy of the movie since they still reply to messages judging from this talk thread over here. Other than that, I'm not entirely sure what else to do for the time being besides watching Gehara if you haven't yet which I recommend if you want a good kaiju parody film since it's only 20 min long.
Welp, I found a higher-res version of the movie uploaded on the Kaiju Recut channel along with a part of the Paphooo!'s Gehara special (about 12 min exact).
Ignore the fact that the thumbnail and title says Making-Of, it's the Paphoo special (since there is a watermark at the top right along with the video cutting off weirdly on the Paphoo logo). Also there seems to be a convention preview footage uploaded on this channel, not sure if It's from the Blu-ray as well (unless it's the promotional material mentioned on CD-Japan) but thought I might as well include anyway
Gonna try and attempt to get in contact with the channel since this all was uploaded two weeks ago. Also here is the CD-Japan link that mentions the extras as well (Will it be in stock, I don't know!) www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/KIXF-1
Before I go into detail with everything that happened after my last post, I want to make a correction. The extras are included on both the dvd and blu-ray release of Gehara. I assumed it was just on the Blu-ray with the dvd-beaver page but the amazon link in my first post and one other site l found said otherwise (dvd's are being sold on ebay for $20 +shipping if anyone wants it, Commentary audio needs to be ripped still)
Now, I'm gonna give the short version since there was quite a bit of waiting for an email. I was able to get in contact with the Kaiju Recut channel and he said he was found the copy off a fansub site he didn't name (remember this) and said he was gonna look for it. Fast-forward a a week and he sends a email saying he found it on his hard drive and tells me he will upload it at some point soon (Spoiler: Tuesday). The making-of and paphooo! special get uploaded, the first slightly cut for his intro but they both go live on Tuesday. The making-of seems blocky for some reason but (almost) all of it is uploaded..... now, it would end here but there was something interesting in the paphooo! video title (Chohatsu Daikaju Gehara BDRip TV Special...). This is the only title that has the full movie title romanized and second, it contains a mention of "BDRip". One google search later reveals this (remember that fansub site I pointed out, this is it)
This was literally the top result (that's pretty infuriating ngl). I don't know much about this fansub group but one quick download of this shows that they are a french fansub group and their twitter shows that they are still active somewhat. Weirdly, they only did the subs for the movie and left everything else untouched. I made some custom subs for just the blu-ray copy of the movie. The dvd ver. is off by one second and personally, the Blu-ray is much better in general (I can actually read the little credits right after the Gehara: The Final chapter title card.... which then made me go into another rabbit hole for "The Artistry of Akira Ifukube" album).
This was a fun hellish journey to go through.... at least I got a copy in Blu-ray and can finally watch the making-of, all that's left is getting someone to do the english subs.
