I remember having this picture book when I was little that I liked a lot, but I'm having trouble recalling the name. And I just can't get it because it's probably packed away in a box somewhere. The book was all pictures, there were no words or dialogue.
I remember the illustrations being very similar to something you would see in an old French newspaper. Being mostly black and white (except for the occasional splash page) with cross-hatching.
The story was about this white angora cat who lived with her two sisters in an old, dilapidated house. She dreams of a better life, but she is mocked by her sisters. So in the middle of the night, she runs away and ends up on a rooftop. She falls asleep and dreams of an angel cat and a devil cat. The angel cat presents an image of her two sisters and the devil cat presents an image of a pile of riches. She chooses the devil cat and awakes to find a rich, gentleman cat standing over her (I remember him being a black and white cat).
The gentleman takes her to his home (a mansion) and the two are immediately smitten with one another. The two decide to get married and eventually have a daughter. Though the couple is extremely happy at first, things quickly begin to sour, as the rich cat reveals himself to be a cruel and selfish man (tom?). At one point, the unhappy couple (plus the rich cat's kindhearted lawyer friend) attend a show starring a famous foreign singer. The rich cat falls in love with the singer and has an affair with her, much to the angora's despair.
Because of this, the angora decides to flee w/ her daughter in the middle of the night and returns to her old home and her sisters. The lawyer cat finds her and (reluctantly) informs her that her husband has decided to annul their marriage so he could run off with the singer. The angora is obviously distraught by this, the lawyer cat then attempts to propose (bc he's been crushing on her for the entirety of the book) but the angora refuses, for fear of her heart getting broken again.
After this, she decides to write out her feelings in a personal memoir. She publishes this memoir, and it becomes a huge success which earns her and her family enough money to move into a better home. The book ends with the angora and her family all living happily in their new home, with the lawyer cat approaching the household with a bouquet of roses.
This book was a beloved part of my childhood, so if anyone can remember the name, I would be very thankful!
