We've covered several lost video games before. We've covered fan games as well. Heck, there are articles about consoles on it too! How about ROM hacks? You know, hacked versions of video games by either bootleggers, or some random dude with an emulator?

This page on TVTropes has mentions of a couple of lost Super Mario World hacks such as Ore World 2, Super Mario World Freedom(not to be confused with Super Mario World FreedoM I think), Notte Luminosa(there was a whole entire scandal made so people could play this ROM hack), & The Mario(not to be confused with that creepypasta hack).

It also mentions user uploaded cities, & components from SimCity 2000, & 3000, mostly due to sites shutting down, being bought by larger companies, & save files becoming corrupted when the site upgrades. Not to mention fan made animals from Zoo Tycoon games getting lost as well due to sites going down.

NOTE: This thread is NOT for stuff like the Satellaview versions of already existing games, Garfield: The Lost Levels on the Sega Channel, nor the American version of Mega Man: The Wily Wars. This thread is only for ones that are either bootlegs, fanmade, or were just shared on the internet at some point by some random person who disappeared from the face of the Earth. If anyone knows of any lost ROM hacks that fit one of those 3 terms, let me know on this thread, & we can get a conversation going.

But anyways, I'm not sure if this counts in your criteria, but I remember there being another "Sonic 2 HD" which was just a remastered version of the Fusion Emulator to have shaders and filtering to be more smooth.

Though if you want to talk lost fanmade games/hacks, then there is possibly a treasure-trope with the Sonic Amateur Games Expo, from sometime before 2012, due to the shift in websites I believe.

Oh, that too. Maybe some of the hacks from pre-2012 were preserves considering how huge the Sonic ROM hacking community is.

I remember when I was getting into the ROM hack collecting scene there were a few I couldn't tell which ROM the patch was specifically designed for. This meant that if I tried to combine the fan made patch to a ROM, the hack wouldn't work as intended. In several cases, I couldn't find the info of what the intended ROM was anywhere. Super Metroid SFI is the best example of what I mean. Every SM ROM I try to play it with results in crazy glitches not intended by the hack creator.

A Week of Garbagefield is a ROM Hack of A Week of Garfield, themed around Joel from Vinesauce's poorly drawn version of Garfield, named Garbagefield. It was created by Zero_Diamond (or Ian Burton according to the video description of Joel's playthrough on YouTube).

Thing is that I can't seem to find this ROM Hack anywhere online, so I guess only Joel and the hack creator have it? It is a bit of a shame, since the creator would later on make a sequel which is easy to find and download, but I guess the sorta prequel isn't for some reason.

Finding the creator is a bit difficult as well it seems but they do have a reddit account so I sent them a message about it. Hoping for the best here.

It's harder to find lost hacks since they tend to be freely available either on well documented hack sharing sites or contest websites or the website of their author, with them being very popular in the 2000s and early 2010s. Fan games on the other hand could be more interesting. For instance, were there multiple versions of Sonic Robo Blast 1 released on the Internet or just the final version? And if so, are these earlier versions lost (I guess you could apply it to earlier versions of rom hacks as well)?

Actually, I'd think it's harder to find information regarding lost ROM hacks due to the overwhelming MAJORITY of known ROM hacks out there. Like we're talking at least 1000 ROM hacks of various video games in existence right now! It can take a few WEEKS to try & find every ROM hack known to exist.

Dustin Wyatt's Epic Adventure is a hack of the 16-bit version of Sonic 1 that was showcased through various videos from the creator. I first came across it in 2009 when I would frequently visit the hacks page on Sonic Retro. Despite having its own page, it has never been released by the creator in any capacity to this day, which is a shame as I still think it looks rather impressive for what it was.
