Edit #1, 8/24/2021: This has turned out to be an ARG.
Please keep in mind that most of my posts in this thread were made when I was under the impression that I was trying to find a lost game.
-----
Just want to start off by saying that I am NOT the original person who is looking for this game.
I just happened to stumble across this while browsing /r/ThatEvilFarmingGame and I found it very interesting so I wanted to share it here. Background
Reddit user WinterTheWolf (whose YouTube username I believe is "Yeety Petey 599") claims they were listening to Lo-fi music mixes on YouTube while having Autoplay turned on, and managed to come across a playlist titled "Some music from a game I don't quite remember". The playlist and its videos were created by user RPGmakerfan12. In the comments section of video "20" WinterTheWolf and RPGmakerfan12 held a conversation discussing the origin of the songs. Apparently they were from an RPG Maker game he and his sister used to play most likely before 2007. The songs were originally put onto an MP3 player, then they were transferred to an old laptop which is where they were recently rediscovered, leading to their upload onto YouTube. WinterTheWolf asked RPGmakerfan12 to describe the game so that they can make a Reddit thread about it. He describes the game as "an exploration game, almost like the original Zelda but with no combat" and that it looked like a default RPG Maker game.
He continues, saying: "The only character dynamic I remember was the game starting in your mother's house and you talked with her and she wished you luck like in pokemon. As well as a shopkeeper which gave me bad vibes as a kid. Halfway through the game it does a switch up and gets all messed up as well. Kind of like those crappy creepypasta games nowadays. That's all I really remember sadly. The PC me and my sister used was lost in a hurricane in 2008 so I haven't been able to play the game since."
With that info, WinterTheWolf created this thread on /r/tipofmyjoystick: https://www.reddit.com/r/tipofmyjoystick/comments/k44ksw/windows_rpg_maker2007partial_soundtrack_lost_rpg/
The Videos
Here is the playlist: www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLxslRUriVw9ywUxL7IyjmrJ0fsF4wUtDs
All 8 videos were uploaded on the same day, November 20, 2020. They all have "video, sharing, camera phone, video phone, free, upload" as the video tags, but that's just the default tags given when uploaders don't choose any themselves. Anyway, the videos do not have any descriptions and the titles are just numbers, which I assume are the original filenames of the game's music files, but that is to be determined. All of the videos with the exception of video "15" have some sort of a distortion/bitcrushing filter for some of the instruments. It's kind of like the sounds that old electronic toys make when their batteries are almost dead. These videos mostly have a kind of sad/eerie feeling to them, and they all have a still image of what I think is the RPG Maker XP icon. Here are some interesting things to note:
Tracks 2 and 20 both share the same melody.
Track 15 is a 13 second guitar loop that plays 4 times. It has a few seconds of strange quiet sounds at the beginning of the track before the guitar starts.
Track 17 is the longest track and is probably the most creepy out of all of them. While it only has the same two notes playing over and over, it also has very heavy distortion sounds in the background that get louder and louder over time.
Leads?
1. You may have noticed RPGmakerfan12's YouTube channel icon and maybe thought that it's from the game, but unfortunately it isn't. Someone asked this in the comments section of video 5 and the response was: "It's from an Art Breeder! That AI stuff interests the hell out of me."
2. Could it be That Evil Farming Game? WinterTheWolf themselves suggested this idea in the subreddit (which is how I found this in the first place), and I have asked RPGmakerfan12 if this is the case. Still waiting for a response back, but I personally don't think that it's related to that in any way.
3. In another thread on here, someone was looking for a different RPG Maker game called "The Eternals" and I gathered a list of old RPG Maker websites for them to go through. I have forwarded this list of websites to RPGmakerfan12 in my "Q&A" comment to them on video 20 to see if the names of any of these sites ring any bells. I also asked a few other questions, such as if they could upload the original music files in case there's metadata within them that can be used to find out where they came from. Again, I'm still waiting to hear back from them.
4. Could it be a hoax? I'm on the fence with this one. The videos were indeed found not long after they were uploaded, and with them having almost no views and no proper titles, descriptions, or video tags, it's a little suspicious. However, YouTube's algorithms work in mysterious ways, so I don't think it's too farfetched. WinterTheWolf said (regarding Autoplay) that "after a while, it goes into a lot of no-view stuff." I'm not sure if this is true or not since I never use YouTube's Autoplay function, but if someone can verify then that would be great.
That's all the info I have for now. If RPGmakerfan12 replies back to me, I'll post an update here.
