Hey everyone.
My girlfriend and I were part of the anime-trading community back in the 90’s (buying and trading bootleg DVDs, etc) and have seen loads of obscure shows, movies, and shorts this way. Many of them we wish we knew the names of and have been searching for ever since.
We were having a conversation last night and we realized we had both been searching for the same anime we’d seen decades back. She got to see part of it in full – whether it was a pilot, first episode, or short OVA, she doesn’t know. I’d only gotten to see a trailer for it on a bootleg trailer collection DVD, which suggests it was an OVA.
I’ll combine our memories of what we saw in hopes that it’ll lead somewhere for someone and we can finally get a title of the thing or best case scenario a link to the anime itself:
- I think it dates from late 70’s to mid 80’s, though my girlfriend thinks up to the early 90’s. She saw more of it than I did so I’ll give her theory the benefit of a doubt.
- The anime was set in space, though we’re 95% sure it wasn’t a mecha. The ship was floating (apparently) solo, and it was huge with an ugly, junky shape, purposely aesthetically unappealing, like it was massive, broken in places, and maybe had parts of other ships slapped on haphazardly. The interior of the ship was also junky, with exposed pipes and machines lying around in the open.
- The central color in the backgrounds was blue – all the mechanics were the same rich blue color, sometimes entering dark purple. Both the exterior and interior of the ship were blue.
- The music was mostly ambient or subtle/melancholy.
- The old Robotech show looks very similar to what we saw (screengrab for context: comicvine1.cbsistatic.com/uploads/original/0/5344/1632153-lisa_hayes_02.png ). The characters had smaller Ghibli-like eyes and features, with an overall soft look. It facially reminded me of the Project A-Ko or Dirty Pair, but not goofy, obviously. My girlfriend remembers the characters looking somewhat elongated.
It was CERTAINLY not in the Galaxy 999 universe, which looks stylistically unique.
- The cast seemed to be entirely made of two characters – both women. She doesn’t remember what they looked like too well, but I remember one being in warm tones and having a Starbuck-like personality, and the other in cool tones having a “wilting flower” personality. I think the Wilting Flower one had lavender hair and wore glasses, but it was around twenty years ago so I can’t count that memory as accurate.
- From what we can gather, the two are the only ones on the ship (maybe there are others in cryostasis, we’re not sure – but we firmly remember there only being two characters walking and talking).
- I remember a scene where Starbuck was piloting the ship, shouting and looking like she was struggling with it, while Wilting Flower seemed overwhelmed on her side of the controls.
- At one point (we both remember this part vividly), Wilting Flower was taken into a large metal pod, carried by hideous metal tentacles that lift her body into the pod and close the door (She remembers Flower walking to the tentacles in a daze, I remember her being fully unconscious). The pod door closes and Starbuck throws herself over the lid, pounding on it and crying.
- My girlfriend remembers seeing Starbuck after this, walking around the ship alone and gazing sadly out the windows into space while the melancholy music played.
And that’s it. That’s all we both remember.
If anyone knows anything about this amine, we’d be stoked to hear it. We’d really like to find it again, even if it’s just a title or the trailer.
