I had no idea where to post this, so I thought I would give it a try here... Anyway, I was browsing some websites, and I came across an announcement on CDJapan that Britney Spears's new album would have Japan-only bonus tracks. Immediately after reading this I remembered quite a lot of bonus tracks go missing/lost. I don't know I just have this feeling these tracks will go lost. Then again, in the description, it says that the bonus tracks are subject to change, so I might be making a fuss for nothing. I would buy this to make sure these don't go lost if they DO exist, but it's hard for me to make money being so young (not even old enough to get a job, and I'm saving up for many things right now), so I thought I would drop by here and find out if it would be worth it to buy this album (I'm not even a Britney Spears fan.) Any opinions?
I don't believe that will become lost at all, her album will sell in Japan by the bucket load and likely end up online in lossless within a matter of days.
I find that there's always music at risk of becoming lost. Right now there's quite a few bands that are releasing material that will no doubt become big one day, but what's out right now will be gone forever.
What bonus tracks are you referring to that have been lost before? In terms of mainstream music I can't think of any, aside from those in REALLY rare pressings (like promo releases or something). It seems like everything I've come across with Japan-exclusive stuff has the bonus tracks up on YouTube almost immediately, and less-than-legal downloads accessible from a simple google search. If it's something that truly isn't on any public sites, 9 times out of 10 you can still find it on Soulseek (and presumably what.cd, if you happen to be a member there (which I'm not))
Anything on YouTube, with how the site operates and what is preferred by the system, many things can and will go lost no matter what. I can see the day when somehow, PewDiePie's videos could go missing. May be a stretch but it CAN happen.
I have ripped every video from the Dilbert Animated Youtube channel and burned them to disc for this very reason. I am also considering doing the same for Vinesauce Vinny's Tomodachi Life streams.

Definitely anything on Youtube as a previous poster said. Armake21's videos got taken down years ago and many are still missing. I remember following many reviewers and original content shows that got taken down or just deleted their accounts and their stuff is now long gone.
By that same token, anything written on blogs or hosted on online servers that the creators dont back up elsewhere will probably go lost.
Anything indie or any number of obscure shows on the one of thousands of TV channels that doesnt find an audience will go off the air and no one will care or notice until it is too late.

the idea that you can find anything online kinda pisses me off for this reason. I think it lulls people into a false sense of security. Hell, even if stuff IS online now, that's no guarantee of its longevity since servers can go down, websites can fail, and so much more all the time. The key is constant vigilance and constant backups. There ought to be some kind of committee dedicated to preserving ALL media if there isn't already. There is the Library of Congress, the Paley Center for Media and more already. They ought to pool resources and create 3 or more independent collections of all media. Probably never gonna happen, but in an ideal world...

I feel like Oobi will be lost, it’s not a household name and I even forgot it’s name or what it was about, I only remembered hands, but it’s not lost yet
Something on Unnus Annus will go lost. I'm sure people are preserving most of it but I just KNOW something will have slipped through the cracks.
_alexpine_ on discord. 2018 was HOW many years ago?!?! 2 correct unidentified/lost media solves out of my probably hundreds of bad guesses isn't THAT bad of a track record, right?
Some bosnian War songs Since they became somewhat popular on the internet in 2016/2017(?) many of them resurfaced, but probably some are still lost or will eventually go lost. Specially because some of them are very likely to get deleted by youtube, like it happened with Kocayine several times, which is the biggest channel on youtube when it comes to Yugoslav Wars music and stuff.
Edit: Actually this applies to any war song on youtube.
I know there's a lot of talk going around right now about preserving the DMT discography - there's been some legal threats against them recently. Small label artists on Bandcamp and other independent services have a strong risk of their content disappearing, especially artists who heavily utilize sampling in their music.
