As a fan of Sesame Street in general I'm looking forward to hearing the audio for anecdotes from Norman Stiles and the like.
Anyway, I can confirm that the reason the episode is not being released is because of the scare factor, not rights; I can't say anymore than that because I was told to say nothing at all. I was told this info by a very important person regarding the episode. My presumption at this point is that the episode will never be released so long as Sesame Street is an active and running brand, and if they wanted to release it they would've done so by now.

“Scare factor”. Really. Everyone has different opinions about these things (Look no farther than CLG Wiki). Just because it scared a handful of kids 40+ years ago (on the SECOND test screening mind you) doesn’t guarantee it still will.
I know there’s lots of kids these days that are so aware and unfazed with scary things they’re dressing up as Pennywise, FNAF, and other horror characters for Halloween or buying the merch. If they aren’t going to release the episodes themselves then you can bet someone online eventually will.
Sorry for the rant. Just felt it had to be said.

There's still hope, as a fuckton of old Sesame Street content (supposedly every episode) is coming to HBO and the Library of Congress/Boston archive for research purposes.
But the episode will most likely never be released by the hand of Sesame Workshop themselves: the idea has been thrown about, but they didn't like the joke that was made of the classic volumes featuring "not suitable for children" disclaimers.

Hey Everyone, while reading the whole thread a question popped in my head, Is there a possibility a spanish or foreign dub of the episode was made?
I could be wrong, but I think most foreign versions of Sesame Street are local adaptations. I think there were some dubs produced, but there's no guarantee that it included 847.

I don't believe it was ever locked. Anyways, asking for the screening leaks or providing them/telling where they can be found is prohibited. No exceptions
Yeah, this is just one of those we have to sit on until it appears one day (if ever). I emailed Sesame Workshop about this to no response; they even responded to dycaite about Cracks, but we held our own little discussion about this on Muppet Central and found a behind-the-scenes photo on the I Am Big Bird website:
I would add this to the Wiki page because it's literally the second photographic proof that this ep. ever existed, but I don't know how.
I know some information on this but all I can say is that it could have been possible for some at the moving museum to have catch this episode too It could be unlikely but hope for the best Emily

Just checked, and the museum has been closed due to the Coronavirus. Might be hard to get a reply.
