The Smurfs first appeared in 1958 in the Belgian comic Johan and Peewit. Johan and Peewit would than appear in the 1976 film The Smurfs and the Magic Flute and various episodes of the 1980s Hanna Barbera iteration of The Smurfs.
Update on the statues on the 1961 series: On October 31, 2022, it was reported that the series will air on an upcoming "FAST channel" called "Smurfs TV", hosted internationally by OTTera through Q4 2022 (except for the United States).
Yeah, we never got the 60s film here. Magic flute was released in america and was the highest grossing non disney animated film at the time. They ignored the awful crappy uk dub that screws up the plot and gets half the names wrong and made a new one. Later they aired flute as a thanksgiving special and added a new voice for papa smurf and moved the later party scene up early to get the smurfs into the film faster. Shout planned to use the american dub for the dvd release but there was a rights snag so they used the crap uk dub that we are now stuck with on dvd and digital. So, most stick with bootleg american dub versions over the real release.
