Before there was Kemono Friends, and before there was Zorori (the Sunrise/TV Asahi version that is), there was Harimogu Harley/Harley Spiny! A kids anime created by Takashi Murakami and animated by Image K and Studio Junio (Now known as SynergySP) that was originally created to be NHK's answer to Shimajiro. Much like Yadamon, Nintama Rantaro (Season 2 onwards) and Ojarumaru, the anime was a series of 10-minute shorts that aired every weekday on NHK (Outside of NHK, this would be 3 segments in one episode). And much like Shounen Ashibe and Shin-chan, it was actually a seinen/adult manga turned into a kiddy anime. The anime originally aired from August 5, 1996, to June 27, 1997, and was cancelled after 2 seasons and 140 episodes due to Image K going bankrupt (Season 1 (Episodes 1–80) aired from August 5, 1996, to November 22, 1996, Season 2 (Episodes 81–140) aired from April 7, 1997, to June 27, 1997). The anime revolves around Harley, a small, mischievous and curious hedgehog. And his friends Risuko (a squirrel who’s a cheerful crybaby who also wants to be a doctor when she grows up), Takuya (a mandrill who’s a mama’s boy who always wants to be number one), Agezo (an insomniac elephant who’s Risuko’s boyfriend) and Gaburine (a crocodile with an eating disorder), and their many misadventures in the Animal Village. Of course just by looking at this piece of lost media, it's basically the perfect example of what Shin-chan would be like if everybody were furries instead of humans! Oh wait... (Notices that "Kasukabe Animal Kingdom" was a thing)
But there is sadly no footage online and little documentation of it. But on February 18, 2008, the first episode was uploaded to Niconico but it was later taken down by NHK. On December 6, 2010, the first 26 episodes were uploaded to Youtube but were later taken down by NHK on November 1, 2013. In 2013 a Photobucket/KnowYourMeme user named Silvercrossbow/Subjugator upload screenshots and GIFs of the first 26 episodes just in time before they were taken down by NHK.
For me, I'd loved to see if somebody on this forum would buy the videotapes and upload the VHSrips to Youtube (Don't forget the Eng subs!), or maybe upload the Original Soundtrack to Youtube, or maybe even buy the manga and the books and upload scans of every page (Don't forget the English translation!) BTW You can easily buy them over on Amazon Japan: www.amazon.co.jp/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?__mk_ja_JP=%E3%82%AB%E3%82%BF%E3%82%AB%E3%83%8A&url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=%E3%81%AF%E3%82%8A%E3%82%82%E3%81%90%E3%83%8F%E3%83%BC%E3%83%AA%E3%83%BC
