Hey guys
If you've been browsing the wiki the past few days, you'll no doubt have noticed a few changes here and there. That is because I have hired a MediaWiki professional to fix up a bunch of things (though this is an ongoing operation).
The first thing you probably noticed was that we are now using different video code. This is to cater to lower resolution screens, as the old way, when the page was scaled down, the videos would not scale down with it and would end up overlapping into the right sidebar. They now DO scale with the page and make for much easier viewing on mobiles or lower resolution devices.
We are in the middle of simplifying this code, I assure you all that everything will fit into place.
Aside from the video code changes, a few other fixes have been made to the site (the 'create page' button in the user dropdown that would take you to google is gone, the site's skin has been tightened up and refined, the weird blank comments page no longer appears when you go to a non-existant page, nor does the weird error when doing so logged out, plus a few other quality-of-life fixes).
Something else you may have noticed is that the comments are currently locked: here's why. Anton (the MediaWiki pro helping me) has advised that the current comments extension we are using is, frankly, outdated and broken. He suggests that we switch to the CommentsStream extension instead. Here's where things get messy - if we go ahead with that advice, we will lose all the current comments and I know this is liable to put a lot of people off the idea of switching. However, I still think we ought to switch sooner than later, but I honestly want your guys' feedback on this matter, so if you could leave a vote in the poll I'd very much appreciate it. Also note that while the current comments would technically be unavailable, I DO have a backup of the site with all the current comments intact, so if there was some pertinent info in any of them, I can retrieve it.
Anyway that's about it for now I just wanted to touch base with you guys about these changes. Rest assured these changes are being made for the benefit of all of you guys, and we absolutely listening to and taking on board feedback along the way.
Take it easy!
