What is an example of something that was geared up to be the "next big thing" in media (and/or in the online space) and did horrifically bad? Bonus if it's really stupid.
1. Indiana Jones 5. I remember hearing about Indiana Jones 5 and being like, "I don't even really like the 4th that much." No one around me seemed particularly hyped either, not at conventions, not among my friends, and not in my online spaces. But Disney and co. (and their shareholders) pushed it forward anyway, because surely IJ5=print $$$ and BOOM, sure enough, it ended up bombing hard. Did anyone honestly want an IJ5???
2. I don't have the name on hand, but supposedly one of Iggy Azalea's fellow singer buddies from Guam (or something like that) was going to be the "next big pop idol" according to some major newspaper, and big surprise, it's been over 10 years and I don't even remember the chick's name. Heck, Azalea herself isn't even relevant anymore!
3. While it wasn't hyped up by the media much at all, nonetheless prior to its release, the Disney film "Home on the Range" (2004) was viewed by multiple animation fans online as "a comeback" for the house of mouse, especially after the lukewarm critical and commercial response to Brother Bear (2003). It in fact, did the TOTAL OPPOSITE and shuttered 2D big-screen animation for MANY years.
4. Most Disney Star Wars products aside from the actual movie sequels of 2015, 17, and 19. I was honestly already burning out on Star Wars by the time Solo came out and I suspected others were too. I get that Disney REALLY wanted to use that franchise they spent so much money obtaining, but I sort of saw the writing on the wall (IE people getting tired of it) before the "other" movies and TV shows started flooding in.
