I think this topic may've come up somewhere on the forums, but I wanted to give my input on it.

For reference, I was born in 2002. That makes me a part of Gen-Z. Well, I guess, earlier Gen Z.

Growing up, I remember that there were a fair amount of child-friendly, safe, fun sites for kids to go to. Nickelodeon, CN, PBS, Noggin/Nick Jr, just to name a few. And games like Club Penguin, Neopets, Webkinz, etc.

Nowadays, you really don't see that anymore. And I find that awfully sad to see, especially for the younger generation. I don't want to sound like a boomer or anything, but it's disappointing kids now won't be able to have a safer experience.

Should kids always be online? Absolutely not, but do kids deserve fun, safe, educational sites? Yes.

It really isn't the same anymore. I get it, things change, but I don't like where it's heading. YouTube Kids, Roblox, scammy mobile games, educational stuff being blocked by paywalls. That's all they really have in terms of "child friendly" site alternatives. I'm probably missing a few, but I can't name it all as I don't have kids.

PBS Kids is still around thankfully, but not enough of younger kids today are aware of it. (Again, probably wrong, I don't have kids.) Noggin's gone, Nickelodeon seems to have game options back up, but a couple years ago they got rid of all their games. CN just recently shut down. MANY online MMOs for kids are also gone. There's just...not enough.

Times have changed, I realize that. I dunno, I just have noticed the lack of safe, fun, and educational sites for kids that isn't YouTube Kids.

I think that's all I have to say for the moment. If you have anything I missed or wanted to add, lemme know.

Yeah! I guess we are the same age, I'm 21.

I know, so that's why I think it's sad. It's ironic it's meant to be the safer alternative, but it's really not. Elsagate is back, and by the looks of it, YouTube doesn't care. And I swear I think we're close to another "ad-pocolypse" situation. I was just stating it's one of the only options kids have nowadays, but it's horrible!

But I can think of so many other things that disappeared from when I was a kid! Even Claire's is going out of style. Stuff like J14 and Tiger Beat were how you got your fix on what all your favorite celebrities were up to, not social media. Also, I remember when you could get kits that were essentially "play makeup", I had a Monster High one. Just some basic nail polishes and some glittery eyeshadow and lip gloss to play around with. My first "real makeup" growing up was Baby Lips tinted lip balm and clear GreatLash. Maybe BB Cream if it was really an occasion. Contrast that with the makeup and "skincare" culture being pushed on young girls now...

Essentially, there used to be this in-between space where you weren't a kid anymore, but you also weren't ready for full on teenhood yet. Virtual worlds, play makeup, Tiger Beat, Justice... these were all sort of your "training wheels" to figuring out who you were in that phase of, say, fourth to seventh grade. That "tween" stage just doesn't seem to exist anymore. (And it's not the kids' fault, of course.)

Yeah, I commented a while back on CN's possible leaked schedule of "new content" which was basically nothing but Adult Swim and preschool shows. Meanwhile, I can remember my own parent watching Johnny Bravo and Spongebob with me, and I have no doubt lots of teens/adults did the same. So many of the shows appealed to so many age groups, but still successfully captured that 7-14 demographic. Obviously marketing and consumerism played a major role, and they were predatory, but I don't know if that can compare to the destructive algorithms and influencer-based, consoomer toxic social media culture of today. It's just so harmful to developing minds in a way I can't quite explain.

For Gen A, there's such a death of true stuff for that 7-14 demographic compared to Mil and Gen Z and it really saddens me. Think about our books, magazines, websites, movies, stores, games, experiences, toys, crafts, activities, etc. They don't have the spaces that we had. CPS may be called on you if you let your child just...be a child playing outside, heck, many children can't even do that with HOA nonsense, car culture, and lack of walkable infrastructure and sidewalks (look at Stranger Things, where the kids just biked almost everywhere, how many kids can do that still today?). Libraries can be hard to access and some have adapted "loitering laws" similar to malls.

Obviously not everything in the 80s/90s/00s was a total sunshine and rainbow fest, there were problems, but I don't know if I would have ever wanted to be born in a different generation than what I was.

I totally agree with this. Well I guess to be fair, many of the types of games that were on the sites of CN or Nick live on in apps. A parent could just download an app for the family iPad and be good to go. Also National Geographic Kids has a pretty solid website.

Someone else brought it up, but I really hate how there is a lacking in middle ground cartoons lately. It seems like the studios are expecting kids to go from Cocomelon to Big Mouth. On a personal note, I’m wondering if that’s why there hasn’t been a cartoon in a while that turned into my obsession in a long time. Preschool shows are generally too simple for me, but I hate the excessive vulgarity that is in some adult cartoons (I’m okay with stuff like The Simpsons). I like general kids cartoons.

Another related issue I have is marketing teen stuff for kids. Last year, the elementary school I worked at was selling Stranger Things posters at the book fair. I’ve also seen Stranger Things t-shirts in the kids section before (I think it was Kohl’s, but I’m not sure and I definitely knew a kindergarten student who regularly wore a Stranger Things t-shirt). I guess you could argue this is nothing new because there were certainly kids wearing South Park shirts as young as 2nd grade when I was growing up.

In a nut shell, I just wish there were more kid friendly stuff kids could grow up without it being too baby-ish or unnecessarily being exposed to adult content.

I agree. People today will complain that kids aren't safe anywhere yet will not make active efforts to....make it safer.

THIS EXACTLY. People complain "kids aren't kids anymore! Always on these damn phones and iPads!!!! Go do something!!" Yet when kids....ACTUALLY be kids, they get yelled at??? Gee, I wonder why kids spend more time inside and on electronics, cause current day won't let them be kids. Don't get me started that some people will find kids being themselves "cringe" too.

To this day I mostly watch "preschool" programming (Blue's Clues is my favourite); the characters are more appealing to me and there is usually consistency in plot (when characters have the same outfit as well it helps me recognise/remember them). For shows intended for older audiences, I'm dependent on the description audio track (if it's available) to identify who is speaking as well as facial expressions (problem is description track doesn't have subtitles and my auditory processing is terrible). The "car culture" in the US is very problematic for me because I can't drive, and although there is public transport where I live most of it is inaccessible, so I rely on paratransit.

Was watching a video on Instagram today and found it pretty interesting, and I think it ties in with a number of things happening today with chilhood/tweenhood. The psychologist talked about how a number of our "modern" failings with our children actually date back to the 1980s. The second half of the 1980s was filled with exaggerated stranger danger amplified by sensational and overstimulated news, ridiculous increase in academic standards (TY "Why Johnny Can't Read" /s), removal of playtime for academic time, parents beginning to overplan everything for their children, parents trying to oversolve all their kids' problems, higher push into "competitive" and fully planned school activities like traveling sports teams instead of spontaneous backyard activities, etc.

How are kids supposed to learn to cope, handle conflict, and function on their own when adults plan, revise, and solve their entire days for them? Parents stick their kids on devices because they are "safe" compared to playing outdoors but like...that device isn't always going to be there to "soothe," and what happens then?

Thankfully for us a lot of these forces didn't kick into MEGA high gear until the 2010s, and I'm pretty sure a fair number of our families didn't fall for them.

But then stretching back to our original poster and post, children/tweens are also forced to grow up too quickly by being too quickly thrust into teen and adult-centric social media and tech algorithms. No middle ground stuff like older family sites because those "aren't profitable" and "popular" the way social media (supposedly) is. Because what else is there for them anymore, especially when everyone else is the class is already on them and spending all THEIR free time on them? FOMO! FOMO! FOMO!

I think it's pretty sad TBH. I am NOT completely advocating for a tech-free childhood, but like...a moderate and balanced tech childhood, but how can we do that when everything is for baby preschoolers, teenagers, or adults??? With nothing in between? And how can they do that when there are few "third spaces" to do that anymore?
