I mean, there's plenty of people who don't watch shounen.. I think a lot of people that exclusively watch shounen are either die-hards to the genre or casuals who only watch what's popular (eg shounen hahaha)
I love anime & I only really like slice of and a couple magical girl shows.Don't think I've seen a single super-popular show... well now I feel like a hipster LOL
If you live outside Japan and you don't like any of the really popular series you're just SOL. Even with generally popular franchises like Precure and Idolmaster you have to be at nerdy events like conventions to find merch of it IRL. In the USA anyway.. and their prices are ridiculous. Seen a guy try and sell a prize figure for $90 at a con once. C'mon now.
And yeah, that's why I brought up the "pop culture store" example. Heck, even many big cons are DROWNING in the same excessive amount of shonen merch to the detriment of other shows. Since you bring up the Idolmaster, at one decent sized con last year, I think I saw 1-3 stalls with (solely) figures from the show, one stall with those little pin things/CDs/game or two. And that was basically it for Idolmaster merch in the the entire Dealer's Room floor. AND that sadly is how it is for a LOT of shows that again, aren't rage sweaty shounen. It's a shame!
Heck, even if the show is ULTRA popular in Japan like Ojamajo Doremi, enjoy that one little "biscuit trading card package" or little music box thing because that is the ONLY piece of merch out of thousands (if not tens of thousands) of pieces of merch at the entire convention for it! Ugh.
