@ kismetflyers I don't remember how many episodes there may have been, sorry! I didn't actually sit down and watch entire episodes back then, I just saw my little cousin playing the tapes over and over when we were at our grandparents' house. I saw a lot of stuff repeating so it probably wasn't very many.
Locally made and/or only worked on by a small team- this sounds very plausible, I think so too!
Are there any logos you might recall from either the start or end of the production? I can search for companies that produced VHS Tapes, but i'd need a distributing company to start that search, if not that's okay, I'm just curious. Additionally, do you recall if this tape was from elsewhere outside of the Bay Area? Probably been asked but jumping in here.

Hi all! Finally got approved for the forums and wanted to commented this since I left it in the discord! Has anyone considered trying local libraries where it was supposedly shown? Not sure about ya'll but my local library still rents out vhs tapes and some of them are the kids educational ones! Probably not a big chance but could be something anyway, and I also wanted to mention this since I did a little bit of digging. The commenter that brought up joyful jumper says it was created in 1994 by The agency for instructional technology, while this might not be it, All of their content is currently located in the University of Indiana's moving picture archive. It could possibly be in there what we need, i'll add this bit from member Historygeek85 on the discord "I am thinking along these lines too. While I was in college, I was part of a puppet show that was done for the homeschool division of the university press. It was a conservative religious college, so they did all of their own productions for the curriculum. That is what this is reminding me of". Good luck everyone on the search! this one has me truly facinated and I'm gonna continue to aid the hunt when I can! Edit: I've also starting throwing in other search terms like ventriloquism doll etc
@ lostinthewavesauce - That Bubba frog puppet is definitely smaller. If the Jumper puppet were created by Axtell it would more likely be Webster the Frog from the video timbo303 posted.
Although if Jumper were the exact same Webster the Frog puppet by Axtell, I don't think I'd know for sure until I saw something from the show in context, because there's a lot of similar looking frog puppets.
I was browsing Axtell's website, they made puppets in the 80s and 90s and are still making them today. However they have retired some of their puppet designs since then. So even if Webster the Frog isn't the same frog used as Jumper, he could still have been made by this company. There probably weren't a whole lot of companies selling high quality puppets, it's kind of niche.
I was also browsing Axtell's collections of monster puppets, but nothing in particular jogged my memory. However they could have also created the monster puppets and any others that were used on the Jumper show.
I don't think the guy in the show was doing a ventriloquist act, I think Jumper had his own voice actor off screen. If he were a ventriloquist he'd be a really talented one to make two different voices and without moving lips, and I'm just not sure if someone with that talent would be performing on such an obscure and probably low-budget show... although I guess I wouldn't entirely rule out the ventriloquist idea, it is possible.
I also don't recall any marionette strings, I was sure Jumper was a hand puppet, but my memory is so hazy I could be wrong. Barry the frog looks significantly different than what I remember Jumper to look like though.
I tried searching eBay and Craigslist for old VHS tapes in the SF Bay Area and in general, but no Jumper came up. Facebook Marketplace I have not tried as I don't have a Facebook account. If anyone else searches Facebook Marketplace that would be great.
@ starstriker - Unfortunately I can't remember any logos, I thought there was a title screen that said "Jumper" but I can't think of any more details. I have no idea where the tapes originated other than probably within the US. My family just happened to find it in San Jose.
@ bigholmes - Searching libraries are a great idea! I don't live in the Bay Area anymore, I moved overseas, so any searching I do irl is pretty limited unless I fly over to visit my family (not sure when that will be). So if anyone else wants to search libraries in the Bay Area or elsewhere in the US that would be cool.
I really have no idea if this series was distributed across the country, or if it was locally produced for schools, or if it was created out of someone's house for homeschooled kids or something... It's so freaking obscure that I'm wondering if the number of tapes was *super* limited. I don't even know if it ever aired on TV (if so it was probably a local public access show like someone in the Youtube comments suggested). I've come to believe that it's probably not on the internet at all.
I don't recall the quality being *too* bad though, there was some effort put into the production, I just think it was kind of minimal and simplistic. Like even if it were made by only a couple of people, they at least had some knowledge of video special effects.
@ MantleM - Recording a melody of what I recall of the monster song is a great idea! I can't play piano but I tried to re-create the tune using an online piano anyway. Here's two variations:

I did some searching and found A wiki page for Locally aired TV shows for children in the 90s. I know it probably didn't air on TV but I found A show marked under San Jose Called Cosmos Castle and it didn't have a Wiki page or Any online info. Could it be this? I highly doubt it.
Not sure this is it, this was up for sale in Oakland on eBay, Called The World of Teddy Ruxpin if anyone wants to comb through the catacombs of the internet. (sorry, still figuring out how to work with this site, so here's an attachment instead, i swear it's not malicious, it's just an image)

Probably not it but this is just something I'm throwing out, but could it be an early version of this. This is a DVD I got in the 2010s but I know it has been around since about the 90s. i wouldn't call is surprising if a VHS tape came out in 95 or so. You get them from the guy coming to your city. When seeing your picture, I immediately thought of this. I know this is kind of a dumb idea. Sorry, if it's already been said. I do have the fully version it's just not online. youtu.be/wulKgm8zHwQ?si=EknwloIm9KdwzZbs
Can you ask your mother the specific neighborhood she found the VHS in, that is if she can remember, that can help us narrow down the radius of the search, since if it is a "Public Access" show, it can help give us a specific location to find a PATC (or a Public Access Television Channel). My thinking is, assuming we can know a neighborhood, we can contact local TV stations or Libraries in that general area and see if they'd have anything, which would help with @ bigholmes suggestion of searching Libraries, and even contacting universities nearby about the program; you know, get the word out beyond the interwebs basically. It's a stretch, but i think it's worth a shot.

Wow, somehow this thread slipped under my radar. I don’t have any new leads but I really hope you find the videos. It sounds interesting. It’s almost certainly a low budget made for video feature. It’s possible it was something made for school, church (I know you said it wasn’t religious), or something like that, that wasn’t intended for resale and just the person with the garage sale worked there, or knew someone who did.

Don't think this is it. Teddy Ruxpin was a huge 80s toy franchise and I have a strong feeling OP wouldn't be on such a wild goose chase here if it was something as famous as that.
Wow, it's so cool seeing all this new interest in the topic! Even though most of the new leads have been debunked, getting deconfirmation is still nice so we can cross more possibilities off the list.
I did come across one new lead while reverse image searching on YouTube. This is the closing logo to a company called Little Frog Productions and uses a puppet that looks quite a bit like what Jumper is supposed to look like. You can't really see his belly at this angle so I'm not sure if it matches up with the recollection, but there is nothing else online that I could find about this. Whatever it's from seems to be documented.
It's possible the company that made Jumper also used him as the company logo.

Wow somehow my eyes completely glossed over that. Okay yeah that's a good starting point then. I did a quick search for that and found an interview show from the late 80s and early 90s. That's probably all it is then, unless somehow the puppet was reused in other productions or the company made more content besides the interview series.

In the interview show it listed two networks, KHIZ and KVVT, and both of them go back to California. However, the locations are Inglewood and Barstow, which are pretty lengthy to San Jose, but it is still possible.
I tried using Shazam and Google audio search with my piano re-creation of the monster song but nothing came up...
Editing post to mention I also tried searching US copyright and trademark listings and didn't find anything there either!
@ lostmediasearcher97 - I have no idea what Cosmos Castle is, it sounds kind of interesting though. I also can't find anything about it online- more lost media?
@ starstriker - I'm familiar with Teddy Ruxpin. The commercials with the talking toy creeped me out as a kid lmao. Nothing to do with Jumper though, not even sure if there were any frogs in that series.
My mom doesn't know of the neighborhood of the garage sale in San Jose where the tapes were found. It was actually my dad who found the tapes but he's since passed away. Not sure if the search would need to be narrowed down that much anyway, as they were found at a garage sale meaning they were already second-hand, and it was a residential area so I wouldn't want to bother anyone living there. The tapes could have been from anywhere in San Jose or the Bay Area or elsewhere.
But contacting public access television channels and libraries in San Jose and elsewhere in the Bay Area is a great idea. Maybe I'll see if I can email anyone about it, I won't be making any phone calls as I'm anxious/ awkward on the phone lol (Plus whoever answers would either need to remember 30 years back at the station, or need to do some research of their own)
Again I don't know if Jumper *ever* aired on TV, I've never seen it aired anywhere, and I watched channels like PBS/ KQED a lot as a kid in the 90s, and a lot of cartoons and other kids' shows in general that weren't on mainstream channels. I suspect that Jumper was direct to VHS, but I still think researching and contacting public access channels in the area is worth a shot.
@ emmabeeking - Although ZakLand isn't Jumper (in fact I never heard of this show), I'm glad you linked to this video because I feel like some of the skits / songs in Jumper probably looked very similar. Like I can't conjure up exact visuals in my mind but the colors and aesthetic give me a sense of familiarity.
@ LSuperSonicQ - I don't know what Little Frog Productions is. I mentioned this before when talking about the Axtell frog puppet, but if I do come across the exact puppet used in Jumper but out of context from the show, I might not recognize it like "that's the one!" because there's so many similar looking frog puppets. Like I don't recall Jumper having particularly unique defining features other than the belly button lol (I don't even know for sure if he had a yellow belly or if he was completely green), he was a pretty generic frog I think, about 1.5 feet tall and sort of Muppet-like. So this frog in the logo might be him, or it might not be. I think it looks kind of too small to be Jumper, but it's hard to tell the size of that puppet from the logo with nothing to compare it to, such a person next to it. I can debunk frog puppets that look significantly different than what I remember (such as Kermit, or Binya Binya, or the small frogs in the Mark Twain puppet show), but if it's really similar it's hard to tell unless there's some extra context.
I do think Jumper could have been in the logo for the show, whether the actual puppet or an illustrated version, but of course I don't know this for sure as I can't recall what the show's logo looked like.
Reverse Google image searching for things that look similar to Jumper is also a good idea. I tried this with a screenshot from the video of Webster the Frog by Axtell and although I didn't find Jumper, I did see some more similar looking stuff.
@ wheredidigo - I also never heard of High Desert AM. If I search for it, only AM radio stuff comes up. If it was an interview show, and not something for kids, it doesn't sound like it had anything to do with Jumper. I guess that debunks Little Frog Productions as being the creators of Jumper, unless they also happened to make a children's show. But I can't find any further info about this group or company.
Update: I found more videos by Little Frog Productions featuring the actual frog from the logo. His name is Arnold the Little Singing Frog.
This one just gets more and more interesting to me, I've combed through dozens of local bay area kids shows so far and still haven't found anything yet. If I have some time I'll send off some emails as well to maybe some local libraries and such in the area. I really do want to see this one solved! I'm also sorry to hear your father has passed Jupiter, hope we can solve this one!
