Would love to hear people's stories! Per the usual, inspired by another thread haha.
Worst: I went to one panel on "underrated anime" only to find that the panelist basically only liked ONE 80s anime, and spent over 75% of the entire panel describing said single 80s anime. Like, we GET it, you liked ______ underrated 80s anime that aired on the scifi channel in the 90s, can we please move on???!!!! Went to a "Saturday morning cartoon" panel that proceeded to play NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING but Darkwing Duck for like 4-5 hours.
Oof, the Saturday morning cartoon panel one sounds a bit WILD. I bet it was good for some, but I would've hoped for more variety. Perhaps a bit of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes(because yes that had a cartoon), Kidd Video, or heck freakin' Space Cats because I love that show.
I wish I went to that underrated anime panel dressed as ChaCha from Akazukin ChaCha(which was who I dressed up as on Halloween 2021) & would've done an annoyingly high pitched voice. I even got a broom for it because ChaCha has one alongside a yellow wig from Party City, THAT'S how dedicated I was to getting the look right & I bet ya' the panelist would be questioning if he/she's dreaming of seeing some guy dressed up as some random girl from an obscure 90s manga/anime. I would've been shaved though, I hate having a beard & a moustache, but still.
Dreams are boundless, imaginations are infinite, space is a multi-directional spiral & Akazukin ChaCha is my favorite anime
My memory is a mixed bag so that’s why I don’t remember.
God,I could’ve phrased that better…
Also I revisited said convention recently and had fun.It was a smaller one though.
Yeah smaller cons, while they don't have the bells and whistles of cons, can still be tons of fun, especially if you want a break from being squeezed in the big con crowds and having to wait in lines for everything. You can also more easily meet and converse with more interesting people.
There is one con here in the Southeast which I love, but my god, having to line up like an hour minimum early to get into ANY panel gets exhausting (the popular ones can make you line up even earlier, like 2 hours!). A small con, you can take your time and walk around, and not have to plan everything around the dealer's room, panels, events, and so on.

Exactly, don't call your panel "Saturday morning cartoons" and then only play ONE single cartoon, which the heck, I don't even know if Darkwing Duck even AIRED on Saturday mornings. It definitely didn't air on Disney's One Saturday morning, which I watched. There's so much variety in cartoons-why not even pick ones from different decades and/or genres, go wild, have fun! If you want to fit in more, just do the cartoons that are divided into 10-11 minute chunks, or a mix of 30 minute cartoons and 10-11 minute ones. So many better ways to run that kind of panel. Have you been in the con scene before? And yeah, again, if you're going to call your panel "underrated anime," we con-goers will ASSUME you are going to cover more than ONE anime. There was nothing outside of the 80s, and like 75% of the panel was just ONE anime. Like, come on!!! Why not Nippon animation stuff, obscure anime movies, weird magical girl shows, obscure shoujo??? Untranslated, unlicensed stuff?
Yeah…. Worst experience: witnessed the Undertale Needle Cookie incident im NEVER going to a con again
Wow, was that like the Kpop incident? Or one of them? I heard at a kpop signing/event that some singer almost ate a needle in a fan-baked cookie, and another gave a fan-baked cookie to his mom who HAD TO HAVE HER STOMACH PUMPED. YIKES.
Cons are great, there's so many varieties and sizes, you just have to find one that works for you, I've been going to them for over 12 years at this point. But they're not for everyone, and I would never pressure anyone who wasn't comfortable to go there. I went to a local con when I lived abroad and was not impressed, it was SO crowded, and you couldn't even stop and look at too much stuff, push, shove, push, shove, MOVE FORWARD. Ugh!
It's really obscure but would be really interested to know if anyone here was at that Illinois furry con a decade ago (or so) where someone leaked chlorine gas and hospitalized a bunch of people. It's wild that they STILL don't know who did it.

I can’t SEND the image of what happened (it’s NSFL) but someone baked a needle into a cookie and gave it to an undertale fanartist. The reason why is because her ships were « Cringe ». Left that community immediately afterwards.
a Vocaloid convention panel I went to, they had a warning at the start not to be controversial with shipping (which is fine), and about halfway through one goes on a rant about how everyone on the team is against age gaps even in fiction (again, fine) and then the last 5 minutes almost everyone on the panel admit their otp is len (14) and gakupo (30)........

IIRC, Darkwing Duck was similar to The Real Ghostbusters in which the show would air on Saturday mornings on a network(both were on ABC), but the main episodes were on syndication across various TV stations airing 5 days a week. Look at the 2nd folder in particular. There was a rule that weekly FRS shows(there were also Saturday FRS shows, not sure if such a rule applied to those because Mighty Max just had a 41 episode run) had to have at least 65 episodes in order to be shown syndicated & as a result, the 2nd season of The Real Ghostbusters has 65 episodes as opposed to the usual 13 like Saturday morning cartoons.
Also TMNT '87 originally aired on syndication, but it channel hopped to CBS around season 4. Honestly, I wish people talked more about syndicated cartoons & their nostalgia for those because honestly I'm more interested in those, especially as it was the birthplace of not just TMNT '87, but also Filmation's 2 Masters of the Universe cartoons(He-Man & She-Ra), Mighty Max, the first G1 My Little Pony animated series, the 1995 DiC dub of Sailor Moon, SEVERAL DiC shows(The Adventures of Teddy Ruxpin, the original Inspector Gadget, Stunt Dawgs, Heathcliff & the Cattilac Cats, The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, Beverly Hills Teens, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, etc.), Saber Rider And the Star Sheriffs, the original Voltron dub, Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers, Princess Gwenevere And the Jewel Riders, Bionic Six, etc.

Unfortunately, yeah, in theory you're supposed to be in a neutral place but you still get your "stanners" at cons who get overly passionate about their weird ships, along with your obligatory weirdos ("yes, I DO think it's weird that you had a timer for when 'Jacob Black's actor' turned 18"). I don't know if it's as common anymore, if it's better or worse than the 2000-10s when the whole "MissScribe debacle" went down (that one involved a published author too), but I think these people will always be with us sadly.

Interesting, I don't remember Darkwing Duck airing on network TV, but looking at the information online, the whole "Disney afternoon" segment DID air there! Which makes sense as Disney channel either wasn't around yet or was still in its infancy stage. Would love to hear more about syndicated cartoons for sure! So many people grew up on them and have no idea they were "syndicated." It was also a big deal when syndication got approved, along with cartoons in the afternoons. It's hard to believe but there was a time when things just aired in one place and then...were just gone? Rather than moved around to different networks and aired there? Wild.
someone was selling hate symbols on clothes in the artists alley. originally they just got asked to remove the hate symbols, but the artists continued to complain until he was removed from the convention. apparently he was friends with some of the head staff at sydnova.
the same convention also charged $300 (usually $5-50) for an autograph from Chris Hemsworth.

I stopped going to cons after that.
Ooof that's wild. Some of the craziest we have had here is the 2014 furry con incident, a handful of scam cons ("Pokemon Go con," or "Mine-o-rama" anyone?), and AI generated art in vendor rooms. Not sure if we've had the "far right" thing at cons (I feel like more con organizers and con attendees lean left), though we do get far right Christian extremists shrieking out of microphones that we are all going to hell for wearing cosplay, or the WORST I've had, an anti-abortion protester shrieking loudly through a microphone right outside my photoshoot in dreadfully hot weather. The most we could do legally was to force him to move down a street so he wasn't as loud.
There are still great cons out there, just for the record. Smaller ones sometimes have fewer issues, even if the lineup isn't the best. Or you're the youngest person there because you thought a "history con" sounded cool LOL
And yeah, celebrity signings get crazy expensive...and you can wait hours in line just to pay for it. Sometimes the lines get so long you'll wait for 3 hours and then they'll just cut off the line right in front of you. I didn't get a signature last year that I really wanted because I just didn't want to waste so much con time standing in line.
