Reportedly some of the original 1998 voicecast would've reprised their roles in an American English dub of the anime that was different from the Ocean Productions English dub, but that never ended up airing. I can't seem to find much on this, but there probably exists some pages out there about this.
Was PPGZ the one that got a "legit" English dub via the Philippines? Does make me wonder if the existence of said dub indicated that the series WAS intended to make it to the states at some point. Though I'm not if American Cartoon Network executives would have been cool with having PPGZ air in the same time frame as PPG reruns (something something "brand confusion?") Or it would have just been too foreign? And in that respect was always intended to just stay in Japan and appeal to that market exclusively, and only made it to other parts of Asia as a fluke???

That Philippines English dub doesn't seem to exist? At least that's what I am getting from The Dubbing Database(which is like one of the few trustworthy sites on dub info on there that is widely available). Ditto for Dubbing Wikia. I would assume that another English dub with most of the original 1998 show's cast was planned to be made for the US specifically.
Craig McCracken was said to have disliked it by some sources, but apparently he DOES respect the anime from what I've read on TVTropes & some other sources may say that he liked the anime.
Also, I could see the original series being VERY popular in Japan considering how generally huge magical girls are & the Japanese DO love American culture(well, specifically California & Hawaii culture, plus a few bit of Texas & Florida culture) for the most part, so to them it's a match made in heaven. Well, if not THAT successful, then definitely a cult following similar to stuff like The Raccoons & Eek! The Cat over here in the US & Canada.

I remember this obscure kids "anime" called Zenryoku Rabbits airing abroad in Asia. To my surprise, there was a 2008 English language trailer via TMS. But the actual show itself seems to have never left East Asia. Pretty interesting. I think I mentioned in another thread that in 2024 I would love to find the original English dubbed version of Sgt Frog (which apparently Nickelodeon liked) and Mermaid Melody (which never got formally licensed outside of the manga here in the states).
Anyone here know any similar stories of shows/movies that were clearly meant to get an English localization and dub (or a first English dub) and never did? Note: I put anime in quotes because I wasn't sure Rabbits would qualify or not.
Oh!! TMS made a TON of these pitch pilots. They used to be on their website years ago IIRC, and Toei had something similar on their European website. Most of them are just someone narrating over some footage, but there's some with actual spoken dialogue here and there. Here's a whole playlist of them.
Thankfully, most of these trailers have been archived, but some of them aren't. (or are, at the very least, they're really hard to find)... off the top of my head, I haven't been able to find the "Lady Georgie" one.

Oh yeah, that's a great point-shows aren't always "successful" or "unsuccessful based on black and white metrics. Some shows can survive solely off bustling merch sales, others develop a smaller but super supportive audience, some just corner an extra lucrative or unique market, some are lucky enough have major financial backing of bigger companies (think: established creator passion projects), etc. I could see PPG being a "modest success" or a "cult hit" in Japan. Sort of like Winx Club, or other foreign shows considered worldwide hits despite perhaps only achieving cult status in a country like say, America.
