It does sounds like Utena. Only thing that's missing from OP's post is I don't think there is a character in black armor? Then again I haven't made it this far yet. I'm like 12 episodes in.
Maybe they're thinking of Utena's knight costume from the opening, when her and Anthy are riding the horses? There isn't any character who really fits the description of the bad guy visually, though.
