As you may know, I am working on a list for the Top 10 Worst Cartoons Based on Video Games. I decided thread to discuss a nagging problem that I have noticed about the majority of worst lists that I have seen to avoid letting it happen on my own upcoming list.
Usually, somebody will do this: "These are the worst cartoons of all time. This cartoon is abysmal because so and so. The same goes for this cartoon..." What I noticed is that the writers never give a reason as to why they are the worst but rather simply rant on why they are just...bad in general. They might say "I never saw anything worse in my life" without justifying as to why.
I found many different examples online. A few in particular were basically full of shows that people in social media have called the absolute worst without reasons justifying why no other cartoon in existence matched the level of bad that these cartoons reached. These lists just seemed like excuses to fit into the popular crowd, but it came off as unnerving and forced.
"Everybody, meet my imaginary friend. She wants to be with the cool crowd and will do anything that she can to keep her reputation."
"What do you want?"
"I just want your opinion...what is the worst cartoon ever?"
"Ever?"
"Yes. As in of every single cartoon ever made."
"With formal production."
"Yes."
"Teen Titans GO!"
"Why?"
<friend rants about bad qualities of shows, go look at other criticisms for a good idea of what she is saying>
"I get why you think it is bad...but what makes it the worst of all?"
"It ruined the original!"
"So did many other shows. Pink Panther and Sons, Yo Yogi!, George of the Jungle..."
"But it ruined the Teen Titans cartoon!"
"Look, a long legendary franchise is bound to have some sort of shortcoming eventually. Teen Titans has been around for 50 years-- and the show is relatively new. The franchise was never really ruined before, so give it credit for staying strong for so long. Tom & Jerry and Scooby Doo, on the other hand, are not so lucky."
"I mean the 2003 cartoon."
"It traces back to the 1960's."
"...look, how do you reach the insulting level of Teen Titans GO! with any other cartoon?"
"What other cartoons have you seen? Anything that might offend your way of life rather than a memorable cartoon?"
"Teen Titans is my life."
"I am not that obsessed with animation. I mean, I do not treat it as a political or religious form."
"What else could possibly reach the carelessness that this show has?"
"Look, I think that we both know that you may just be delusional about it being the absolute worst cartoon ever made."
"How so?"
"You are my imaginary friend, knowing what I know--and I never even watched the 2003 Teen Titans cartoon."
<friend stares blankly>
"My point is that you really need to stop and let reason be the judge--of course, not without some help from emotion."
"Like in Reason and Emotion?"
"Yes. You seem to want be like everyone calling the show the absolute worst show ever to be found--letting emotion have full control. That is not to say that there is no reason to not call it the worst cartoon ever--just stop to consider if there is any other cartoon in existence that ever stood against it as worse. Justify properly, and you never know what we will discover."
You see, folks, worst lists need to have reasons as to why the show is both bad and among the worst in comparison to other candidates. If we were not so fame-hungry, then people might have actually realised this by now. I will keep this in mind as I work on my list. Will you?
